Verne was someone who was a friend who I will never forget. He was always there when you needed him.

Vern was my friend and patient.

It must be a rare thing these days to be able to say that you have known a person for his entire life, from beginning to end, but such is the case of Vern, and I am pleased to say that I had that pleasure. And there are few individuals that I have known as generous to his neighborhood. To have Vern as a friend and neighbor was a double bonus, and one that I could always count on was both his hallmark and measure of the man. His memory is secure.

Having grown up on Franklin Avenue just across the street from Vern, known as Bud in those days, I have plenty of fond memories imprinted in my mind. As my fathers best friend, he was very much of the unofficial uncle. And I loved messing around in his garage and playing with whatever tools I could get away with. I even learned basic welding from Verne. Moving away from Western Springs as an adult, our paths crossed less often, but I always enjoyed touching bases with him when visiting my own parents on 'the avenue'. One more recent memory stands out. When Vern and his friend Marty visited England where I now live with my wife, and we enjoyed a wonderful meal together at our house and I played tour guide for him while in London. He will be missed and remembered.
