Ronald Hurst Obituary

Ronald W. Hurst First and foremost, Ronald William Hurst was a teacher, and on March 22, 2014, he taught us what it was like to reach the end of life with bravery, dignity and humor. For more than 40 years, until his retirement in 1993, Ron led high school history and political science classes at Morton East High School. There, he not only focused on academics; he also served as mentor, friend and advocate for thousands of students. His passion to educate extended well beyond the classroom, whether at a museum, the racetrack, opera, or at Hursts ' Berwyn Jewelers discussing the artistic, historical and social context of jewelry. For years, his weekly columns in Suburban Life, which linked historical and current events to different facets of gems and jewelry became must-reads for many of the store 's customers. Ron 's love for education was matched by his love of the jewelry business. It started in the mid-fifties when he and older brother, George Hurst, rode the "L", couriering gems, gold and jewelry between Berwyn Jewelers and the many jewelry businesses in downtown Chicago. Ron and George, both educators, then worked in the store part-time until owner, Michael Hadraba, passed away in 1966, and they purchased the business from his estate. In 1974, Kathy O 'Brien came to work for the store, and in the summer of 1977, she and Ron were married. In 1981, a fire in the adjoining building threatened to destroy the business, but community members who knew Ron and George, joined in pulling out the merchandise, and not one piece of jewelry was lost. The store soon re-opened in a building next door, where Ron continued to work through December 2013. For several years, Ron participated in the Berwyn Development Corporation. He received the Board of Directors Service Award for 2008-2010, as well as the President 's Award for 2010. Despite managing two careers, Ron was not all work and no play. He also dabbled in amateur car racing and was an avid traveler and motorcyclist. It could be said that his love for adventure started early. As a young boy, Ron climbed the mast of a naval ship at Navy Pier, much to the chagrin of older sister, Velma, who had to climb up after him. The sense of adventure and love of history never waned. Even in the face of a five-year battle with lymphoma, Ron and Kathy realized their dreams of visiting London and Paris and their many museums. In his final days, Ron was surrounded by family and friends, sharing love, laughter, and perhaps a few lessons on the historic developments contributing to today 's geo-political climate. Ron was the beloved husband of Kathy, nee O 'Brien; loving father of Rebecca (Michael McGuire) Hurst, William (Lisa), and Robert; grandfather of Blais and Zane Hurst. He also is survived by sister, Velma (late Alex) Koehler; and brother, George (Myra) Hurst. Services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301-75th Street, Downers Grove. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Morton Scholarship League c/o Wanda Moy at Morton West High School, or the Mayo Clinic. For funeral information: 630-964-6500 or hjfunerals.com.

After Googling his name today, I was saddened to learn that Ron passed away nearly two years ago. We were in the JSM-East class of '55, and I counted him among my 4 or 5 best friends. We had a few classes together, but what turned him on was history while my interest was science and math. He could be counted on to make a class interesting by his questions and comments, often seeming to know more than the teacher. He could talk for an hour on the history of the Russian Navy, and this in the days long before the Internet and Wikipedia! Our last semester we had English with Mr. P. L. Kiser and had lots of fun memorizing and acting out the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales. Ron was a real sparkplug for all kinds of antics, both in school and out - we formed the Screwball Club and did some pretty outlandish things; he was always enjoyable to be with. But he was a hard worker too in class and out. After class and on weekends he worked at Mike Hadraba's (sp?) Berwyn Jewelers which he took over years later. The last few years at Morton I worked as an usher at the Berwyn Theater, just a few doors away, and we often visited each other during slow periods. And he shared some pretty thrilling rides in his red MG TD.
We lost contact during our college years and went our separate ways, but I knew that he taught at our alma mater and am jealous of the students who were exposed to his knowledge, wit, and humanity. I knew his parents and brother but never met his wife and children, and I share their loss of one of the most interesting and memorable people I've ever met.

Ron Hurst was simply the most memorable teacher and mentor of my high school experience - and remained a lifelong friend. He taught so much more than the American History curriculum - he taught perspective and a questioning attitude without tolerating half-efforts. I'll miss him! Dave Lipinski

Mr Hurst was one of my favorite teachers at Morton East. I enjoyed enjoyed his teaching style and attending class. Many years after graduating, I visited Hurst Jewelers where Mr Hurst shared his knowledge of diamonds and I was able to select the perfect engagement ring and later wedding rings. American History with Ron Hurst was my favorite class in High School. He made us think for ourselves, and spent lots of time laughing, as well. One of my fondest memories of high school was the field trip we took with Mr Clifford -- it was a wonderful time and that was because he made it fun.

My condolences to my classmate, Kathy O'Brien, who was in that same history class with me, for the loss of her husband of many years.

When visiting with Ron at his home lst summer, at a time when he wasn't doing too well. I asked him if he ever was tired of being a guinea pig. He stated very simply "I'll never mind being a guinea pig if it helps someone live a little longer.
This man has my highest respect and admiration--some one concerned for others, not just himself. There is a word in the Finnish language "SISU" which means many things--courage, stamina, fighting spirit, tenacity, a true fighter for just causes, etc., etc.
Ronald was a man of true "SISU".
You all remain in our thoughts and prayers.
