Michael Turlek Obituary

Michael Turlek, 82, of Lyons, formerly of New Britain, CT, civic-minded environmental activist, at rest February 28, 2009. US Navy WWII volunteer, Submarine Service, Pacific Fleet. Upon Stateside return, he married Gloria Kucharchuk, settled in Lyons, IL and started a family. Proud to be recognized in the community for his diligence and unmatched volunteer work on environmental matters, Mr. Turlek was a tireless proponent for a healthy environment, especially clean air. A founding member of LION (Lyons Incinerator Opponent Network) and first chairman of the Environmental Quality Control Commission of Lyons, Mr. Turlek's research and testimony at numerous public hearings were major contributors to the prevention of toxic emissions in Illinois. His research linking toxic waste incineration with cancer is published in the US Congressional Record. Celebrated July 4th, 2006, as Honorary Parade Marshal in recognition for community service. Mr. Turlek is survived by his loving wife Gloria; children Stephen (the late Patricia), Carole, Donald (Christina), and Teresa; beloved grandfather of Michelle (Eric) Rank and Sharon Turlek; fond uncle and granduncle to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Susan, brothers John, Stephen, and Joseph. Cremation and inurnment private. Arrangements by Tower Home for Funerals, Lyons, IL, 708-447-7900.
