Louis Hoornbeek Obituary

Louis A. 'Lou' Hoornbeek
Born: February 11, 1930
Died: December 31, 2023
Louis Arthur Hoornbeek ("Lou"), of Glen Ellyn since 1973, passed away on December 31, 2023 after a short illness.
On February 11, 1930, Lou was born in Ellenville, New York to Clarence Arthur Hoornbeek and Nancy Durland Hoornbeek. His family ancestors had lived in the Hudson River Valley for nine generations. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. After graduating from Union College, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served two years on shipboard during the Korean Conflict and retired from the Naval Reserve as Lieutenant Commander after 21 years.
On November 9, 1957, Lou married Lynda Ruth Couch of Springfield, Illinois, whom he met while both were obtaining advanced degrees at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. They had three sons: John, David, and Mark.
After receiving an MBA from Cornell University, Lou worked as a Contract Administrator for various government contractors, including Argonne National Laboratory and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Research Institute. While he and his family lived in four states, he has spent the last fifty years in the Glen Ellyn area. He has been active in the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, Kiwanis, and other civic activities. He also played saxophone for the Retired Rhythm Rascals, a Dixieland band based in the Glen Ellyn area.
Lou is survived by his wife, Lynda Couch Hoornbeek who now lives in Lombard, Illinois; his sons John Arthur Hoornbeek (Laurie Klappauf) of Hudson, Ohio, David William Hoornbeek (Sue Paslaski) of Puyallup, Washington, and Mark Benjamin Hoornbeek, of Golden Valley, Minnesota; his brother Frank Durland Hoornbeek of Brooklyn, New York; his grandchildren, Allison Rae, Hannah Claire, Daniel John, Sarah Nancy, Zoe Berus, and Sonja Lee; and multiple beloved nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday January 12 at Leonard Memorial Funeral Home in Glen Ellyn from 4-8pm. On Saturday January 13, the burial will take place at 10am at Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn and a service celebrating Lou's life will be held at 11:30am at the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, followed by a reception at the church.

I did not know Lou well but met him several times and was always impressed with his intellectual curiosity, openness and determination. I would have liked to have known him better. I do know that he was a fine father for three wonderful sons. My deepest condolences to the Hoornbeek family upon your loss, our loss too.
