Born in Chicago, Illinois, Lorraine grew up alongside older brother Raymond, the children of Vincent and Theresa Kaczmarek. She married Robert Hayden in 1960, and they made Downers Grove their home beginning in 1967, raising a family and building a life filled with hard work, love, laughter, and kindness.
Throughout her life, Lorraine held many jobs, starting out at a local bakery and the telephone company in her younger years, to food industry, office, and retail positions later on in her career, most notably with JCPenney, where she developed friendships that would continue beyond her employment. No matter the position, she brought dedication, integrity, and a welcoming smile to everything she did.
Lorraine also gave generously of her time to others, assisting at her children's schools and serving in multiple volunteer positions at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, where her faith and compassion were central to her life.
More than anything, Lorraine treasured being a mother, grandmother, and in 2025, a great-grandmother. Her family was the joy of her life. She loved spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking, and her homemade apple pie was just one of the many favorites. She also enjoyed gardening, attending plays, shows, and concerts, traveling with her husband, family, or friends, and cheering on the Chicago Cubs.
Her warmth and compassion were only surpassed by her kindness. Lorraine touched countless lives with her gentle nature and genuine compassion.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Robert. She is survived by her children, Robert (Kathleen), Theresa Mejdrech (Daniel), and Patricia, six grandchildren -- Daniel (Jen), Brian (Bella), Steven, Thomas, Brenna, and Ruzele, and great-grandson Hayden.
In honor of Lorraine's life, a visitation will be held at Modell Funeral Home, 7710 S. Cass Avenue, Darien, on Sunday, November 2nd, from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. Words of remembrance and prayers will commence at 12:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorraine's name made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the charity of your choice are greatly appreciated.
Lorraine's love, light, and kindness will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
