Joel Nielsen Obituary

Joel Marion Nielsen 1916 ~ 2006 Wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away April 27, 2006 at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home at the age of 89. Born October 26, 1916 in Salt Lake City, the oldest of seven children born to Joseph Richard and Mary Danielsen Nielsen. He graduated from South High School and proudly served his country in World War II. Joel married his sweetheart Louise Cutler September 13, 1946. He worked for the Veterans Administration and they enjoyed traveling all over the United States. They finally settled in Utah to raise their family where Joel managed the GSA Motor Pool in Salt Lake and Ogden. He always had a great love for cars, and after his retirement from the Government in 1975, he spent many years in the car business buying and selling his beloved Cadillacs. Until a stroke in 2000, golf was his passion, and he and his wife spent many winters in Palm Springs. He also enjoyed fishing the Weber River and frequently shared his catch with his neighbors. Above all, he valued spending time with his family. Joel was always very wise, and looked on the positive side of life. He was proud of his rose garden, and especially loved being in his own backyard enjoying the view of Mt. Olympus and watching children and grandchildren swim. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and credited his long and healthy life to living the Word of Wisdom. Survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, and children: Patricia Newhouse (Edward), Dennis, Kurt, Kris Campbell (Richard). He leaves his five grandchildren who were the light of his life: Mary Healy (Jason), Joseph, James, Nicholas and Erik, as well as a great-grandson, Porter. He is also survived by his brother John. Words cannot express the gratitude the family has for the kind and loving care of the wonderful staff at the Utah State Veterans Nursing Home where he spent the past 27 months. A viewing will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home, 1001 11th Avenue, followed by services at 2:30 p.m. Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery. Dear Louise and Joel's Family, I admire your courage Louise as you bravely faced those difficult decision for Joel. I know how much you loved him and how hard it was to go to the hospital to see him and he wanted always to go home. Now he has gone home and will find great joy and happiness again. I know he will be dearly missed by all of you.

Jill and I wish to express our sympathy to all of you. Uncle Joel was a fine man and I know you will miss him dearly. His sister (my mother), Mary Marcella, experienced the same loss of personality during the last few years of her life. By the time she left us almost two years ago, we were happy to see her suffering end. Your experience is perhaps similar. But they are missed.

I remember Joel best in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He took my brother, Gary, and me fishing on the Provo river and also Deer Creek reservoir. The afternoons we spent swimming at his house are also fond memories. Like his brothers, he seemed to me to always be a very gentle man, and always treated me with kindness. Although I have not known him for several years, I feel his loss, and am saddened by it.

Jill and I are out of town today, the day of his funeral. But our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends as they say goodby to him. I wish we could be there with you.

I will miss Uncle Joel. I've always enjoyed going to visit him and Aunt Louise. I bought a '74 Cadillac Eldorado from Uncle Joel, and loved driving that beautiful car all around Utah. I hope Aunt Louise will be all right, and wish her the best.

I will miss my grandpa so much. He meant a lot to me and I love him. I admired him. As his only granddaughter he treated me like a princess. I will never forget his smile, his many kind words. I know he is watching over me.

Wow Joel, How lucky for you to finally pass thru the viel -- to see and know so much more than all of us can imagine. I'm sure your brother Boyd was there to greet you and thank you for all the times you visited him over the last 2 years of his life. Althought you were always there for him, he needed you the most at that time. My mom (your sister) who left us last month was probably one of those who encouraged you to cross over. She loved you very much and talked about your often.

Kris, Kurt, Louise and family; I feel your pain of loss. I also feel your joy for Joel. It's an inner conflict you will battle and finally accept. I hated to see my mom (his sister) leave us. Her mind left us last year but I loved being able to hold her. I knew she wasn't really there. She must have been giving us time to adjust to her leaving. You know my love goes out to you.
