JANE Hoffer SEABORG
Born: November 18, 1917
Died: October 5, 2017
Jane Hoffer Seaborg passed away on October 5, 2017 at her home in Westminster, Colorado, her family sadly announces. Daughter of Daniel Richard Hoffer and Elizabeth Brown Hoffer of Chicago, Illinois,
Jane was born November 18, 1917. Her father was a faculty member and gymnastics coach at the University of Chicago. Jane attended the University Lab School through high school and began classes at the University of Chicago at 16, graduating in 1937. Jane's family spent time in Chicago, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and at her father's boy's camp in the mountains of Colorado.
While attending the University of Chicago, she met fellow student and ice skater, Earl William Seaborg. Married on October 26, 1941, Jane and Earl had four children, Elisabeth "Beth", Earl W Jr "Billy", Jon, and Anne. She lost her son, Billy, at the age of three.
The Seaborgs moved to Downers Grove, Illinois in 1952. While in Downers Grove, Jane returned to school for her teaching credentials. She taught in the Downers Grove Public Schools, was active in the Downers Grove Chapter of AAUW and other related educational projects. In the mid 70's, she and Earl retired to Brevard, North Carolina. Jane was active in adult literacy programs in the Brevard area as a teacher, administrator and organizer, as well as marching for the passage of the ERA in North Carolina. Jane and Earl traveled, with learning always as an important goal.
After Earl's death in the early 80's, Jane remained in Brevard until moving to Westminster, Colorado in 1995. She continued to travel on Elder Hostel, National Geographic, and University of Chicago Alumni trips, and participated in everything from riding in a jeep with sloths in Belize, exploring the fiords of Norway and Alaska, sleeping on an ice flow in Greenland in her 80's, to rafting at her granddaughter's wedding in her 90's. She usually had at least three books going at any moment.
The appetite for aggressive learning is the legacy she left for her children, grand children, students and friends.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, Earl W. Seaborg; son, Earl William Seaborg, Jr.; father, Daniel Hoffer; mother, Elizabeth Hoffer; and sister, Catherine Hoffer Zikmund.
She is survived by Elisabeth "Beth" Carter (Larry) of Lusby, Maryland, Jon (Cheryl Kennedy) of Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, Anne Sutton (Scott) of Thornton, Colorado; nine grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren.
The family requests any memorials to Jane be given to adult literacy programs.
