James Humay Obituary

James Walter Humay
Born: October 1, 1941 in Chicago, IL
Died: July 18, 2025 in Hinsdale, IL
James Walter Humay, 83, beloved son, brother, husband, father, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully on July 18th, surrounded by family at his home in Hinsdale.
Jim lived a life marked by kindness, compassion, and quiet strength-aside from when he was on the ball fields. Above all else, he was devoted to his family and poured his heart into every moment spent as a husband, father, and grandfather, always leading by example-with patience, humility, and integrity.
Born on Chicago's South Side on October 1, 1941, he attended Maine Township High School. He went on to play baseball and earn his degree in Political Science from Northwestern University. He later received his master's degree in education from Northern Illinois University. A lifelong educator, Jim spent over 30 years in the classroom, shaping the lives of countless students-not just through the lessons he taught, but more importantly, through the values he lived by. He believed in the potential of every student and loved sharing his quick wit and elaborate stories-some true, and some not quite as true.
Jim was also known as a passionate coach, dedicating evenings and weekends to his athletes. On the field, he saw coaching not just as a way to win games, but as a chance to build character, teach teamwork, and instill drive. His former students and athletes often speak of the impact he had on their lives well beyond their school years. In recognition of his service as a teacher, coach, and athletic director, Jim was inducted into the Wheaton Warrenville South High School Hall of Fame in 2013.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Bea and Lefty, and by his two amazing wives, Marlene Humay and Nancy Voss Humay-both of whom he supported with unwavering love and care throughout their illnesses. He will be deeply missed by his siblings, Dan (Pat), and Joyce; his children, Jim, Meg (Dan Sheahan), and Joe; his grandchildren, Alex, Yulia, Nina, Maximus, Cannon, Tessa, and Cason; and his loving extended family, Jenna and Kenny Julian and their children Elisa, Will, and Lia. His legacy lives on in the lives of dear friends, former students, colleagues, and coaches-those he taught with grace, coached with heart, and loved without limit.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24th, at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hinsdale from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family and friends will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 25th, for a funeral Mass at Saint Isaac Jogues Church, 306 W. Fourth St., Hinsdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jim's memory to either The Les Turner ALS Foundation at lesturnerals.org or The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).org" target="_new" rel="nofollow">PanCAN (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).org

I met Coach Humay when he joined Wheaton North in 1983, just before my final high school baseball season. I never had Coach Humay in a class, buthis coaching was also an education. I remember his wisdom, his firmness, but also his willingness to allow a player to make a mistake. He also taught me more about the mental game than I had learned before. He encouraged me to play beyond high school and balance academics and athletics. I remember his sly smiles, shared at a difficult moment and I consider myself lucky to have been a part of his life.

I loved political science class with Mr. Humay. I learned so much! (Did you know Chicago is one of the most segregated cities in the U.S.?) I also had the privilege of playing varsity baseball under Coach Humay. Somehow he found a way to challenge our cozy suburban culture with away games in places like inner-city Chicago and Joliet. He and I had two very significant conversations (one in 10th grade, the other in 12th) that helped shape key decisions for me at the time. Despite taking place 40 years ago, I can still recall each of those with vivid detail. I am grateful to be one small part of his long lasting legacy! He will be missed.
