James Doig Obituary

James K. Doig
Died: December 10, 2024
James K. Doig, age 88, proud U.S. Army Veteran, of LaGrange, passed away on December 10, 2024. James was born and raised on a dairy farm in Upstate New York. He married his lifelong love Betty Doig on April 6th 1962 and was a loving and supportive husband for 62 years. Dedicated father to Leslie Doig, Tom Doig, John Doig, and Susan (Matthew Seifert) Doig. Devoted grandfather of Jay (Kaitlyn) Doig, Andrew Doig, Helen (Logan Charboneau) Doig, Stephanie McKeegan, Quentin McKeegan, Tamara (Nicholas Martin) VanNewhouse, and Nicholas VanNewhouse. Cherished great-grandfather Madelyn, James, Aveline, Francis, Maeve, and Nicholas. Dear brother of Anne (late Glenn) Valentine. Fond brother-in-law of John McNaughton. Uncle and friend of many.
James will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family, community, and work family at Weber Flavors. He lived a life rooted in love and purpose until the very end. A natural caretaker, Jim was always the first to offer a helping hand or sage advice. Generous to his core, he took extra care to make everyone feel welcome in his home and in spaces he held dear. He would often remember little details about what people liked and was intentional about anticipating the needs of others. As a father and husband, he was ahead of his time and set an example as an equal partner. His passion for connecting people was unparalleled; he believed in the power of relationships to enrich lives and bring people together. He will be remembered for his integrity and honesty in life and at work, never afraid to do the right thing.
The funeral will be held in January at The Presbyterian Church of Western Springs. Details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to one of his favorite charities: The Audubon Society audubon.org or Trilogy Behavioral Healthcare Trilogyinc.org. Arrangements entrusted to Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside at 708-352-6500 or HJfunerals.com.

We were so saddened to just recently hear about Jim´s passing. He and his wife Betty were longtime regulars at Antonino´s, and over the years, Jim became more than just a customer - he became a friend. Always kind, always smiling, and always ready to chat about life and family. His presence brought warmth to every visit, and we´ll truly miss seeing him walk through our doors. Our heartfelt thoughts are with Betty and their family.

Met Jim many yeas ago at Fitzgerald's where Chick and I enjoyed the music together with him. He was the most kind, soft spoken, gentle soul we have ever met.. He was so kind and understanding of my grief when Chick died in 2022. Because I have not gone to Fitzies in a long time I just heard of his passing. I am SO VERY SORRY. Our birthdays are a few days apart, mine being the 24th and to find out today on his birthday has really saddened me .So I WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND PRAY THE ANGLES ARE PLAYING HIM ALL HIS FAVORITE MUSIC. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND I AM BLESSED TO HAVE KNOWN YOU. NATALIE

In mycology the study of fungi a holotype or type species is the "official" representative of a species and is used to classify and describe it. It's what all others in that species are named after . As a friend of the family through Tom, Jim's oldest son, I have come to consider Jim as the holotype of  "Dad" or "Father".  I've never witnessed a Dad so caring about the well being and comfort of his family, friends and strangers until I met Mr. AND Mrs. Doig.   I consider her too to be  quite holotypical of "Mom" and when I married my husband I told him these are the people I want to emulate as a couple.   I will remember how Jim could always meet people at whatever level they were at.   He could always find something to be interested in about another human being. I remember how he shared jokes and knowledge readily.   It's been such a blessing for me to know Jim and Betty and the rest of the Doig family, to spend multiple winters together with Tom, Jim and Betty in Florida, to go birding, share meals, even share holidays at times and just to feel the warmth the family emits.   I think Jim went out perfectly, just like he came in.  I'm glad he did not have to suffer many of the indignities many do as they get old .  He was an exceptional man who lived an exceptional hootypical life.   I will miss him dearly.

In Loving Memory,
Hunter Le Duc

Jim was a fellow member of the Chicago Suburban Antiques Dealers Association. He was a volunteer who provided a helping hand; who shared a positive attitude to anything he took on. I loved his smile and kindness which he extended to all. I will miss him.

Colleague, mentor, but most of all my friend who I loved dearly. I will be praying we will once again travel together. Until then, may God reward you for the amazing life you led, and for the wonderful influence you have had on so many.
