Glen Asselmeier Obituary

Dr. Glen H. Asselmeier passed away Tuesday August 28, 2012 at age 85. Glen was born February 14, 1927 to Herbert and Draga (Mueller) Asselmeier. He was born in Valmeyer, Illinois, a very small town in southern Illinois, just south and across the river from St. Louis, Missouri. Glen was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Army from 1945-1947, and a Korean War Veteran serving in the US Air Force 1951-1953. Glen resided in Glen Ellyn, Illinois for the past 48 years. Glen graduated from Valmeyer High School in 1945. He was drafted June 1945 and spent 17 weeks in infantry training and two years in Germany obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his service in the military, he entered Southern Illinois University and graduated in 1951. Glen was recalled for the Korean War and served 22 months at Scott Field near St. Louis as a Sergeant Major in the Headquarters Air Training Command. Glen's military service allowed him to pursue a career in medicine under the GI Bill of Rights. He later graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School (1957). He took his surgery training at Hines Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines, Illinois. Glen was one of five founding physicians of The Glen Ellyn Clinic (now part of DuPage Medical Group), which organization now numbers 250 MDs. Glen is survived by his wife Carolyn (nee) Faisst, whom he married on August 28, 1954. Glen was the loving father of Gail (Teesdale), Dr. Marc (Carol), Pamela (Lisa Krieshok) & Dr. Scott (Mary). Glen raised his children to work hard, help others and enjoy life. His children have gone into medicine, law and psychotherapy. Glen has eight dearly loved grandchildren: Scott (Rebekah) and Katharine Teesdale, Carrie and Charlie Asselmeier, Emily, Max and Gibson Asselmeier, and Amelia Krieshok. Glen is also survived by one sister, Gail Beckman living in St. Louis, MO, and three cherished nephews and a niece: Marty (Norma), Walter and Christopher Beckman, and Rachel (Larry) Bourneuf, Glen was a friend to all that sought his company and a father figure to many. Glen loved to spend time with friends over a friendly (and sometimes competitive) game of cards and golf. Many will remember Glen's companionship and generosity on outings to Blackhawks & Bears games. He was a trusted, capable and calm medical advisor to family, friends, neighbors and of course, his patients. Glen's mother taught him to play a mean game of gin rummy and poker which he passed on to his kids and grandkids. He passed peacefully at home with family around him. Glen fought a valiant fight against leukemia over the last 8 years and showed great courage to those who accompanied him during his battle. Glen will be greatly missed by all. Donations can be made to the DuPage Medical Group Charitable Foundation (www.dmgcharitablefund.org) or to CNS Home Health & Hospice. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church, 493 Forest Avenue at 2 pm. A shuttle service will be available from the DuPage Medical Center East parking lot at 430 Pennsylvania Ave., beginning at 1 pm to church as parking is very limited near the church. A Celebration of Glen's life to follow after the service at Glen Oak Country Club, 21 West 451 Hill Ave. from 4 -7 pm. (Leave ample time to get to the church as Glenbard West H.S. football traffic will be heavy in the area.) Rest in peace ,Dr. Asselmeier. You were an excellent physician but more importantly you were a wonderful, caring, gentle man .You were loved by your patients , respected by your colleagues and honored by all who had the pleasure of working with or for you. Thank you for all you did to make CDH the institution it is! As one of the nurses who had the honor to care for you during your last hospital stay, I was humbled by your graciousness, kindness, and wit and your abiding love for your wife, children and family.
You will be greatly missed by all. God Bless you and your family.

God bless you, Dr. Asselmeier. I just wanted to thank you for all you've done for your patients. I was a scared young lady when I saw you at CDH about my surgery. You explained everything to me in such detail (and plain Enlgish), that I was comforted and prepared for my surgery. You made me so at ease!! You also set the standard for my future doctors!!!
Thank you, again, and may you rest in peace!! You will always be in my heart!
