Girtrue Smith, 76, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Born in Thomaston, Alabama, to Evelyn Watson and James Earl Smith Sr., Girtrue was a proud graduate of McKinley High School where she marched as a majorette. Through the years she worked in several fields—including the bowling alley, child care, and housekeeping—always carrying herself with dignity and reliability. In time, she devoted herself to caring for her beloved mother until her passing in 2009.
Girtrue was known for her strength and independence and for a warm, fun-loving spirit. She was the aunt whose infectious laugh brightened every room and who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved cooking for family and relaxing with her favorite shows—The Waltons, Little House on the Prairie, Gunsmoke, Hallmark movies, and keeping up with the Real Housewives.
She is survived by her sister, Sarah Bacon (Donald) of Savannah, Georgia; her aunt, Gertha Austin of Thomaston, Alabama; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Girtrue was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn Watson and James Earl Smith Sr.; her son, General Smith Jr.; her brother, James Earl Smith Jr.; her sisters, Carrie L. Todd, Eva J. Williams, Velma Wheelock, and Ruby Lathan; and her brother-in-law, Edwin C. Williams Jr.
