Gary Lester Obituary

Gary Lester, age 58, passed on March 30, 2011, in his home in Downers Grove, after battling lung and liver cancers since January of this year. Mr. Lester was born in Phoenix, Arizona on March 23, 1953 to his parents Dorothy and Andrew Lester. He is survived by his wife, Shelly Lester, and five sons, Adam 27, Mark 24, Jeff 18, Grant 12, Jackson 9, and his one daughter Taylor 6. He is also survived by his brother Dan Lester (St. George, UT), sister Susan Bryson (Bountiful, UT) and twin sister Gayle McKay (Sandy Lake, PA). He was preceded in death by his father Andrew (1960), sister Diana Brown (1995), step-father Ted Hollingsworth (1995), brother Irv Lester (2006), and his mother Dorothy Hollingsworth (2006). He is survived by more than thirty nephews and nieces. Gary obtained his Bachelor's Degree from Illinois State University and two Master's Degrees from Chicago State University and Governors State University. Starting in 1975, at Thornwood High School in South Holland, served as a social studies teacher and coach for many years, prior to becoming a high school administrator. He was the Principal of Thornwood High School, where he was names the State of Illinois' High School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals' Association in 2006 and the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 2007. However, Gary's first love was always teaching in the classroom or on the athletic field. He always considered himself a teacher at heart more than a school administrator. Taking early retirement, after 34 years, in July of 2009, his retirement was spent in the joy of coaching Longshots Baseball, Swarm and Panther Football, and Nomads Basketball. He was also proud to have been elected to and served on the Downers Grove District 58 Board of Education. His love of sports started in his childhood, as a baseball (White Sox) fan, and continued with football where he was captain and quarterback of an undefeated state championship Thornridge High School football team in 1970. He found great joy this past fall in assisting as offensive coordinator with his son Grant's team that was undefeated State of Illinois and Midwestern champs for the Darien Swarm Pop Warner football team. Despite his love of schools and sports, his greatest joy was his family. He would often say how blessed he was to have a life so full of happiness and joy. He adored all of his children, knowing that each was so uniquely capable of so many great things. Visitation will be held Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 3-8pm at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 301-75th St. Downers Grove. A funeral service will be held Sunday 2pm, at O'Neill Middle School, 635-59th St., Downers Grove. Interment Clarendon Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Gary Lester Memorial Fund to be used to benefit sports and educational programs for children. Funeral info 630-964-6500.

Gary,

Has it really been ten years? Nearly once a week at school I find myself stopping and wondering, "what would Gary do?" I hope we'll meet again one day, and I hope that you will be able to be pleased with my efforts over the years.

Gary was an inspiring administrator; always caring, always working, always professional. His principal's office was directly under my classroom, where I had a small washer & dryer for our lab. I remember the time I ran a load of towels with the ejector hose out of place, and the soap water rained down on him. He was really good about it when he could have been angry!

Gary surely touched more people than we will ever know. He made TW a better place for all of us. So sorry to lose him so soon. When he couldn't attend a Sox game at the last minute, he'd give me a call to see if I could use the tickets. He knew we were great sox fans. I know he's cheering for his team from above. Love to all the family

Gary, we had some great moments together on the football field. You were our QB on one of the best high school football teams ever. You handed me the ball many times, and handed me some great memories. Keep throwing passes in heaven, and I will fake a handoff....

Gary taught me to look at a sunrise in a different way. to just value that you are still on this earth for one more day. That you CAN handle what ever comes in the course of the day. When the sun goes down its time to rest. No need to worry about tomorrow, do that when you see the sunrise again. Thank you Shelly for sharing Gary with all of us. I know that he has left his mark on my life in the short time we talked.

My deepest sympathies go out to all of Gary's family and friends. What a loss, and what a great man Gary was! I just communicated with him a few weeks ago, and he told me he was thinking about what other things he could do, now that his children were all in school. I am sure he is already finding a way to inspire or assist others, where he is now! How fortunate we all have been to know and love Gary! Sending prayers.

I am grateful to have known Gary as a dean and Assistant Principal at Thornwood High School. Professionally, he remains to this day my ideal of a school administrator; professional, compassionate, patient, and absolutely dedicated to both his students and staff - but with students ultimately first. Outside of his job, he was a gentle and devoted husband and father, and his love for Shelly and his children was very evident. I admired him as a leader and as a person. I feel a great sense of loss, mingled with gratitude to have been able to know Gary in this life. Love and blessings and comfort to Shelly and the rest of the family...Gary will be missed terribly by many, but I cannot imagine your sense of loss at this time.
