Douglas Smith Obituary

CHERRYFIELD - Douglas D. Smith Sr. passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, while surrounded by his loved ones at home. He was the son of Barney I. Smith and Gertrude M. (Dorr) Smith, who predeceased him.

Doug always had a love for racing cars. He drove for 30 years on tracks around Maine and New Hampshire. His brother Randy always made sure his 7X car was in tip top condition, for capturing the checkered flag was the only way to race he would say. He was a gifted musician who taught himself to play guitar at a young age. He loved trying new instruments and learning new songs. He traveled with the Dick Stacey Jamboree and played on local radio shows. Some of his best memories were playing with his son Doug Jr. and his brothers. There was rarely a family gathering without music. Doug had a passion for hunting. He looked forward to the fall so that he could hunt with his sons. They enjoyed their early morning coffee and sharing of stories. Throughout his life, Doug wore many hats in order to make a living. He learned to live off the land at a young age. He hand sewed shoes for years, becoming so good that he was one of the few selected to create special order shoes from his home, and he later managed a specialty hand sewn shop in Eastport. Doug went on to serve his county for 12 years as a Deputy Sheriff. He settled down to finish in the construction business which he ran with his son, Tony. Together they worked to keep their town roads safe in the winter. Doug would say his greatest legacy was in his family.

He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Mary L. (Beal) Smith. Together they had seven children, Cindy, Doug Jr. and Bob Smith, Maria Seavey, Tony Smith, Terri Swanson and Duanne Smith; 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; brother, Randy Smith; sisters, Linda Burgess and Nancy Perry; cousin and lifelong friend, Craig Smith; and special friend, George Cropley. He was predeceased by five brothers and one sister.

We will celebrate his life Nov. 30 in his hometown of Cherryfield. Our family has started an educational scholarship for students of Narraguagus High School. Donations may be sent to Douglas D. Smith Scholarship fund at any branch of Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.
