Cheryle Slamkowski Obituary

Cheryle Ann Slamkowski
Born: May 26, 1947 in East Chicago, IN
Died: June 3, 2024 in Darien, IL
It is with deep sorrow and love that we announce the passing of Cheryle A. Slamkowski on June 3, 2024. She was the cornerstone of our family and her caring arms surrounded us for the full 77 years of her life. She will be eternally missed as our sister, aunt, and friend.
Cheryle was born and raised in East Chicago, Indiana, the daughter of Leo and Priscilla (née Konkoly) Slamkowski in 1947. She graduated high school from Bishop Noll Institute in 1965 before graduating from Marquette University in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Cheryle later completed an MSN from Rush University College of Nursing.
For the past 35 years, Cheryle made her home in Darien, Illinois, and was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and served both communities loyally. She was a skilled nurse with a certification in critical care, working at several Chicago area hospitals and most recently as an administrator at First Health. Her wisdom and support benefited many, including colleagues and friends.
Cheryle was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Priscilla Slamkowski and her father Leo. She will be greatly missed by her sister, Carol (Stan) Kwasny of St. Louis, Missouri, her nieces, Jennifer (Adam) Costanza of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Michelle Kwasny (Ryan Powell) of Madison, Wisconsin, and by her six grandnephews and grandnieces.
The family will gather for a celebration of her life in Darien at a later date. Condolences and memories are appreciated. Donations may be made in Cheryle's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Darien, Illinois in lieu of flowers.
We will grieve her loss for all our lives. We love you, Cheryle. Rest well.

Cheryle was a valued and supportive roommate post college when we ventured out to Hines VA for our first nursing job. She was soft spoken and a true friend, an intelligent, caring nurse. Unfortunately, we lost touch after my marriage to Jeff where he & I moved to Missouri and then to Minnesota. I'm not surprised that she became an advanced professional.

This is a beautiful obituary for a special person who truly loved her family. Cheryle was a wonderful neighbor. After moving from the city to our HOA in 2020, I bothered her constantly for HVAC, electrician, landscapers, plumber, etc referrals, and she patiently showed me the ropes, always with excellent suggestions. Over the past four years, I loved getting to know her, especially hearing about her amazing nieces and grand-nieces/nephews -- her face glowed when she talked about them, so evident was her love! And she was so kind to my little nephew, giving him Halloween candy and acting appropriately wowed by his various costumes and random tricks he loved to perform for her. She also mentored me as I was deciding whether to change careers; our little daily chats out on the driveway or by the mailbox about work, changing jobs, retirement, purpose, etc. meant so much to me. She was like a mentor to me on Aunting and life. I will miss her!

Cheryl was a good friend of mine at Eagles Nest. She even let me use her power washer once! I moved from Eagles Nest last summer and she made it a point to see where I was moving to and wondered if we could meet for lunch and get together when I was back in town. She was very kind and thoughtful. Always a good friend to all. I lived at Eagles Nest for 21 yrs too and knew Priscilla. Very nice family. And a good friend of Hershey the neighbor cat!
