Anthony Cardillo Obituary

CHATHAM — Anthony P. Cardillo, 87, died on April 7, 2009, at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation & Skilled Care Center.

A resident of Cape Cod for the past 25 years, Mr. Cardillo was born on Dec. 3, 1921, in Pelham, N.Y. He was one of six children; his brothers, Dominic and Rocco, the late Carmine and Albert, and one sister, the late Mary Ciaiti.

Mr. Cardillo retired to Chatham full time in 1984, and loved every minute of it. He served in the Marine Corps from 1941-1945, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was stationed in the Pacific during World War II. Later, on the GI bill he attended the Lincoln College of Chiropractic in Indiana, where he was class valedictorian.

After a career as a doctor, Mr. Cardillo transitioned into a career as a salesman and then executive with the typewriter company, Underwood, and then the parent firm, Olivetti. As an executive there until the early 1980s, he was responsible for marketing some of the company's most innovative products, including one of the first consumer computers.

The Cardillo family started summer vacationing in Chatham in the 1970s. Soon after, the couple bought a house near the Chatham ball field. Mr. Cardillo enjoyed the busy summer clamming and fishing with his friend Harry and the quiet winters. The couple often visited their two children when they lived in California, New York and Virginia. He also enjoyed building additions onto their house here, tinkering, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, and watching sports.

Mr. Cardillo is survived by his wife, Irene; daughters, Nina and Lauren; sons-in-law, Ruben Rogers of Berkshire, N.Y., and Dr. Martin Skopp of Alexandria, Va.; and three granddaughters, Francesca Decker of Berkshire, N.Y., Rachel Skopp-Cardillo and Juliana Skopp-Cardillo, both of Alexandria, Va.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, April 14, at 11 a.m., at Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Avenue, Chatham. Burial will be private.
