Alexander Allison Obituary
Alexander C. 'Sandy' Allison
Alexander C. Allison (Sandy to all) passed away peacefully on November 23, 2024, in his Glen Ellyn home after a long battle with Lewy Body dementia.
He was 86 years old.
Sandy was born in New York City in 1938 and grew up in Garden City on Long Island. He attended Garden City High School, where he met Rinda Yust, his future wife, while working on the school newspaper. Sandy graduated from Amherst College in 1960 and married Rinda the same year. Sandy attended the University of Chicago law school earning his degree in 1963. He clerked for an Illinois Appellate Court Judge for two years before joining Sidley Austin. Sandy joined the general counsel's office of the Northern Illinois Gas Company where he worked for more than 30 years before retiring in 2003.
Sandy served for many years on the board of the Metropolitan Family Services of DuPage county and was honored in 2014 with the agency's Roger K. Johnson award. Sandy also served on the board of trustees of the Glen Ellyn Public Library. Sandy had a half century long relationship with St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn. He served on the Vestry and as Treasurer and in many other roles at the Church.
Sandy and Rinda loved to read, gather with friends and to travel. They would pile the family into the station wagon for a drive to visit distant national parks or far flung family members. When they were older, they took themselves on cruises to the Greek isles and safaris in Africa with long time friends. One of their favorite destinations was the porch at Lakeview cottage at Twin Lake Villa in New Hampshire. Sandy had been going to TLV with his parents and siblings for many years. It gave him joy to bring his children and grandchildren to TLV. There, Sandy and Rinda could sit in rocking chairs and watch the loons on the lake. They would join in as the extended family ate, swam, golfed, hiked, read or napped. And while Sandy wasn't able to travel to TLV recently, the family will miss him that much more this summer.
Sandy is survived by his wife Rinda, their children Tim (wife Meryl) Matt and Emily (husband Arul) Allison-Sundaram and their grandchildren by age Sophie, Jake, Xander, Kevin, Ben, Riya and Zubin. We all miss our husband, father, grandfather and friend.
A memorial service was on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church Glen Ellyn, IL. Please consider a donation to support Metropolitan Family Services of DuPage or the Movement Disorders & Community Research clinic at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
