Timothy Sweeney Obituary

Timothy "Tim" Joseph Sweeney died peacefully on July 31, 2010. He was a true American patriot who loved Chicago and his country, and who proudly flew the flag daily. His love for life and humor touched all who encountered him. Tim is the loving husband of 60 years of Eileen nee Callaghan; brother of his twin sister Margaret, the late John J. (Marj) and the late Matthew; son of the late Margaret nee Mahoney and John J. Sweeney, C.P.D. killed-in-the-line of duty; dear dad of Mary (David Harrington), Timothy (Teryl nee Philbin), Dennis (Tom Benthien, O.D.), Terrence (Peggy nee Sullivan), Patricia (Bob Jean) of AZ, and Karen (Jim) Schram; loving grandfather "Pa" to Timothy, Brian (Sara), Patrick Sweeney and Molly, Marty, Colleen, Terry and Nora Sweeney; special cousin "Tee" of the Egan's: Neen, Mickey, the late Eileen and late Billy, C.P.D; fond uncle of Sue Sweeney Burow and Jack Sweeney of CA; uncle, cousin and nephew to many, including the Mahoney family in Chicago and Ireland. Tim retired as an Engineer from Illinois Bell Telephone Company with over 42 years of service. In retirement, he served as Vice President of Travel World and led 13 trips to Spain where he learned to speak Spanish and graze on tapas. He served honorably in World War II as a Navigator in the U. S. Army Air Corps, he graduated St. Phillip's High School in Chicago and attended Albion College in Michigan. Past President of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Past President of the Mater Christi Holy Name Society and former Trustee of the Village of North Riverside, IL. Also a member of the Chicago American Legion Post 0343, and the Chicago Police Department's Gold Star Families. Tim enjoyed sipping a cold beer in his back yard in the sunshine while listening to the Cubs game on his transistor radio, tending to his garden, especially his tomato plants, reading books about World War II and airplanes, and interjecting his favorite quotes from "The Quiet Man". He loved music, especially George M. Cohan, Al Jolson, and Marilyn Monroe, he was our "Yankee Doodle Dandy", a "real live nephew of his Uncle Sam", and loved to celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends. He prayed the Rosary daily, and always looked forward to tomorrow. He is greatly missed. Visitation Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 3 to 9 p.m. at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home, 80 E. Burlington St., Riverside. Funeral services Wed. Aug. 4, 2010, 9:30 a.m at Ivins/Moravecek to Mater Christi Church, North Riverside. Mass 10:00 a.m. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. I happened upon your father's notice quite by accident. We are so sorry for your loss. We never met him, but your eloquent tribute paints a beautiful portrait of a much loved man.
