Theodore Kraft Obituary

Theodore E. Kraft died on July 7, 2012 in the Downers Grove home he shared with his wife of 39 years, Linda Laufenburg Kraft. Ted and Linda moved into the house 32 years ago, just months before the birth of their only child, Caroline Kraft. Throughout his 66 years, Ted lived a life marked by extraordinary curiosity and intellect, a sly sense of humor, a keen sense of responsibility, and a quiet kindness. He took pleasure in very simple things, although in his character he possessed great depth. He is survived by his wife and daughter, as well as his sister, Sue Rund of Houston, TX, brother-in-law Norman Rund, and step-niece Natalie Rund. Ted will be missed by his Dale, Laufenburg, and Westphal relatives and cousins and by many friends who live across the country. A visitation (2:00pm) and memorial service (3:30pm) will take place on Sunday, July 15 at First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial gifts to First United Methodist Church, 1032 Maple Ave., Downers Grove, IL 60515 or St. Thomas Hospice, 119 East Ogden Ave., Ste.111, Hinsdale, IL 60521 or to Centre College, 600 N. Walnut, Danville, KY 40422 (Dr. Theodore E. Kraft Scholarship)

Dear Linda and Caroline,
We were so sorry to learn of Ted's death. Although we had known of him for so many years it was our pleasure to meet Ted only once, during those few days when you, Linda, and he came to stay. From the first moment those qualities which the obituary described, not least his quiet sense of humour, his modesty and kindness, made it feel as if we had known each other a long time. Others who knew him well have described the impact he has had upon so many lives and we hope that in that and your own treasured memories you will find some comfort.
With our sincere condolences,
Pauline and Adrian Johnson, York, England

Dear Kraft Family,
I had the pleasure of both working with and running with Ted for many years at AT&T/Lucent/ALU. The obit and many nice rememberences say it so well - exceptional intelligence while very gentle and humble, a wonderful sense of humor, and mostly just a kind and caring person. He was the guy I wanted to sit next to in a meeting, bounce ideas off, and just laugh with. Often something he casually said in conversation had a lasting and deeper impact on me than I knew at the time. I'm thankful for having known him and am sure he is on his way to heaven.

Ted was a great guy and we will miss him. The service on Sunday was uplifting and a great tribute to Ted. Caroline, your shared memories brought to mind Ted's humor, interest in learning and gentle kindness. We were all lucky to know Ted.

Had a great time working with Ted for many years at AT&T/Lucent/Alcatel-Lucent. I always enjoyed our interactions, albeit mostly over the phone or via email. Found this great quote from Ted which captures some of the spirit and wisdom I remember from him: "Human nature is what it is, and in spite of technology changes and futuristic projections, human nature will change only slowly. If we ignore that, we ignore history -- a dangerous proposition on many levels."

Peace and God's blessings to the family in this difficult time.

The obituary for Ted in the Chicago Tribune could not have been better written. It perfectly describes the Ted we all had the good fortune to know and love. His physical presence is sorely missed, but his exemplary life is an inspiration we carry in our hearts.

Our love and hugs to Linda and Caroline and family.

Dear Linda and Caroline,
I am so sorry for your loss of your beloved Ted and Dad. I hope you and all your family and friends remember that Ted IS still with you -- and so proud of and grateful to you ... in the very Present Tense.
I grieve with you AND celebrate Ted's Life well and Joyfully and selflessly lived. I can only imagine that Heaven is now a witter, erudite-ier place.
I celebrate YOU, too, who perfectly practiced Betty's Love As an ACTION Verb with Ted and one another. Be sure you make now time to Care-with-Love for yourselves ... even if only one breath at a time.
If your out-of-town family and friends need a place to stay or to come and just BE ... The Chapel is yours.
Blessings, Linda and Caroline.
And Love.

Ted was a good running friend at Alcatel-Lucent in Naperville. His lunch time runs with his dedicated passion and quick humor made the runs more enjoyable. He was an inspiration and challenged us to always run farther and faster each time. He will be missed and always remembered.

Dear Kraft Family,

We have known Ted as work colleagues for over ten years. We always enjoyed when Ted could join the lunch- time running groups because he always had a positive attitude and something to contribute to the conversation no matter what the topic and he was a better runner than most us. We kept in touch with Ted periodically after he retired and through his illness and can only respect and admire his courage until the end. Please accept our sincere condolences during this difficult time.

Sincerely,

Chris Davolos

Dear Linda,

I was very saddened to hear of Ted's passing. His discipline, honesty and sense of humor were appreciated by all of his friends at work, especially his running buddies. May you find comfort in his memory, that he touched a lot of lives, and the assurance that he is with his Creator.
