Susan Anderson Obituary

Susan Marie Anderson
Born: June 23, 1959
Died: July 25, 2022
Susan M. Anderson, EdD, 63, of Westmont, Illinois passed away peacefully on July 25th.
The visitation will occur on August 2nd from 3 to 8 p.m. at Toon Funeral Home, 109 North Cass Avenue, Westmont, IL. The funeral will be held on August 3rd at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 111 South Cass Avenue, Westmont, IL with family and friends meeting at church, followed by a luncheon to celebrate Sue's life. In lieu of wearing black, please wear purple or Northwestern University (NU) gear in honor of Sue's favorite color and her love of NU.
Sue was born on June 23, 1959 in Murray, UT, the daughter of Blaine and Dolores (Dolly). Throughout her childhood, she excelled in school and developed a love for reading and a strong sense of self. She was very close with her sister, Barbara. After she graduated from Galt High School, she was proud to be the first member of her family to attend college and moved from California to attend NU in Evanston, IL. There, she became life-long best friends with her roommate, Sheryl, was an active member of the Alpha Phi sorority and fell in love with Steven Ambrose. After graduating from NU, Steve and Sue married, and they had 3 children together: Jordan, Corbett, and Kelsey. While raising three children, Sue taught students of all ages, received her Doctor of Education in Reading and Language Arts, helped start a still-thriving bunko group, volunteered in numerous leadership roles, played a pivotal role in the annual Illinois Young Authors Conference, and served as a reading specialist and a 3rd grade teacher for District 58 in Downers Grove, IL for the last 20 years. She was a loving grandma to Fletcher and Keaton Spillane. Fletcher loved having Grandma read to him and swimming in Grandma's pool.
Sue truly lived life. She took many trips with family and friends, including the annual Memorial Day Weekend trip to Michigan with the Ostrowski family, was a great cook and baker, inspired countless individuals with her passion for education and volunteering, enjoyed social events and hosting parties, loved Christmas and giving gifts, and could often be found sitting on the couch with either a good book or a fun Hallmark or Lifetime movie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, niece and nephew Heidi and Chance Weaver, and honorary family members Bob and Jeff Loyd. She is survived by Steve Ambrose of Westmont, Il; her mother-in-law Joan Schuit (Bob) of Oak Brook, IL; siblings Barbara Weaver (Virgil) of Red Bluff, CA and Dick Eller (Trudie) of Sonora, CA; brother-in-law David Ambrose (Nancy) of Bradenton, FL; children Jordan Spillane (Andrew) of Menomonee Falls, WI, and Corbett and Kelsey Ambrose of Westmont, IL; grandchildren Fletcher and Keaton Spillane of Menomonee Falls, WI; nephews RJ Weaver (Michelle) of Meridian, ID and Lang Weaver of Red Bluff, CA and niece Holly Geiger (Evan) of Red Bluff, CA; great-niece and great-nephews; and her honorary family members Joan Loyd of Glenview, IL; Sheryl and Rob Long of Northbrook, IL; Jessica Long of Dakar, Senegal, and Nora Long Bellot (Gabbie) of Queens, NY.
Sue will be missed by all who love her.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sue's memory to Reading Is Fundamental (rif.org).

Dr. Anderson was an amazing and impactful teacher. She was one of our favorite Hillcrest educators. She understood her students well and knew how to push and find their potential. She really cared about her kids well after they left her classroom. We are so blessed to have had her in our lives.

Sue & I were in the doctoral program at the same time at National Louis University. It was wonderful to share reading ideas and stories about the children that we were teaching! Not long afterwards, I joined to board of the Illinois Language & Literacy Council. Sue was one of the leaders who organized the Young Authors' Conference every May in Normal. It was such a joy to work with Sue through the years on this conference. She will be dearly missed by her colleagues, friends, parents, children, and the authors, and illustrators of Illinois. She was a truly gifted educator! We will miss you, Sue.

We were so very blessed that Dr. Anderson was our son´s third grade teacher. Dist 99 has lost a great educator, who possessed the rare attributes of exceptional technical knowledge, sincere compassion for her students, and the passion to give both every day. Dr. Anderson set the gold standard for education. Please accept our sincere condolences.

I was lucky enough to assist in Sue´s classroom for part of a semester and to bring students with some special needs into her classroom. Her love for her students was very evident. She always had such complimentary things to say about them. She was so supportive of them, and myself. And so very proud of all the accomplishments they made. She will be so missed. Sending my deepest condolences to your family.

I worked with Sue as a volunteer with the House Corporation Board of Alpha Phi at Northwestern. Her passion for NU and for the women of Alpha Phi was evident, and she worked tirelessly while holding down her demanding job at Hillcrest. She was a determined and strong leader and a teacher with a caring heart, and she will be missed.

My son Tej was in Dr. Anderson's 4th grade class and it was our 1st year at Hillcrest . Her kindness, empathy and support enabled a shy boy with special needs to open up and share his personality with the class. She had a writing program in which the kids would share a running diary with her and it was a joy to hear what Tej was sharing with her. Also, she once mistook me as the nanny and that will always warm my 40 year old heart :) She had a gift and our son was so lucky to have her as a teacher. She will be missed and I hope knowing the legacy she leaves will easy your burden during this difficult time.

Sue was a dear cousin of mine. We grew up together with Barbie as our Fathers worked together building dams. I have precious memories of all of us being in the Lodi Grape festival parade. Our moms made our costumes and we had a batting routine that was so much fun. And we also lived in a very nice trailer park. And we would put on a play for all that lived there Sue always was the director and made the plays so much fun. And then there was our Barbie dolls. We had wagons full of them and would move from house to house setting up and playing for hours. As we got older we kind of moved on with our separate lives but each year we would exchange Christmas letters about our lives and families. She was a great lady and an example of perfection in what it is you decide to do with your life. May she REST IN PEACE. And May God comfort her family and friends. She was loved by many and will be missed.
