Shirley Hollenbeck Obituary

Shirley H. Hollenbeck (nee Wiegman), 81, of Wheaton and formerly of Glen Ellyn and Lombard, passed away Monday, September 22, 2008 at her home. Shirley was born April 2, 1927 in Chicago, IL. She was employed for 20 years in the library at Glenbard West High School, prompting many students to share her lifelong love of books and reading. Shirley has lived in DuPage County most of her life. She attended Lincoln Elementary School in Lombard and Glenbard High School in Glen Ellyn. During those school years, a group of 17 girls banded together as the "Lilacs" in observance of Lombard, "The Lilac Town". Though separted geographically, they continue a lively correspondence and an occasional get together. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn, serving on many committees and most notably in the Church Library for many years. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Leonard Hollenbeck; fond mother of David (Anita), Alan (Karen) and Peter (Donna) and dear grandmother of Laura, Andrew, Emily, Alex, Shannon, great-granddaughter Anna-Grace. Visitation will be held Sunday, September 28, 2008 4-8pm at the Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. Funeral services Monday, September 29, 2008 10am at the First United Methodist Church, Glen Ellyn with the Rev. Dr. Tom Potenza officiating. Interment private at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions given in Shirley's memory to the First United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, 424 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements handled by Leonard Memorial Home, (630) 469-0032.

Dear Len and family,
I was so saddened to learn of Shirley's death. She was such a comfort and help to me during my Mom's long illness and death earlier this year. I will never forget all her help keeping all of the L.I.L.A.C.S. up-to-date. She was such a lovely lady who will be missed by many.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

What a wonderful aunt, my Aunt Shirley. She was a dear friend to me, my mom, our whole family. She never said an unkind word to anyone. I will always remember her wonderful disposition and loving, generous, kind ways of greeting everyone she knew. She always made me feel important and special--as I am sure she did everyone. Oh I will miss her so. I'm lucky that she was in my life. Dear Uncle Len, David, Alan, and Peter--you were so lucky to have had such a wonderful wife and mother. Love you all.

To my mother-in-law, Mom Hollenbeck:

Your memory will live on in my heart. You welcomed me into your heart, your home, and your family with open arms.

I remember all the books you passed along to me from your book clubs--you must have been selective in your choices as I found them all to be excellent.

I remember many thoughtful and generous gifts over the years that were clearly chosen with me, Peter, or the kids specifically in mind. Thank you for taking the time to get to know each of us so well.

I remember many delightful family gatherings with a table full of food lovingly prepared. And especially the awesome banana bread for breakfast whenever we would stay at your home.

I remember a kind, gentle woman who never lost her temper, raised her voice in anger, or was judgmental about how others lived their lives. You accepted us each with our own foibles and flaws.

I will miss you dearly.

Love,
Donna

Dear Hollenbeck's,
Aunt Shirley was a wonderful part of our family. Always calm with her soothing voice. She will be missed by us all but knowing she is in heaven watching over us all is our comfort. My love is sent to all of you at this time especially Uncle Len.
