Ronald Dugan Obituary

Ronald Lee Dugan, a long time resident of Downers Grove and for the past 11 years at Manor Care in Hinsdale, passed away on May 21, 2012 at the age of 69. Ronald was born May 7, 1943 at the post hospital in Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. He is survived by his father Leroy Dugan of East Lansing Michigan; brother Terry Dugan of Vandalia, Michigan; sister Maureen Angelo of Moraga, California; nephews Craig and Steve Dugan and nieces Lauren Angelo and Elizabeth Dugan. A graveside service was held for Ron at a cemetery with great historical significance for his family, Poplar Grove, in Marshall Indiana, where Ron wished to be buried. Ron was a determined polio survivor, who despite severe physical limitations imposed by this disease, attended college at the University of Illinois where he gained both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in math education. He subsequently taught for over 30 years at Downers Grove South High school until his retirement. The University of Illinois had a superb program for students with handicaps, permitting Ron to develop both the attitude and abilities to participate in both his work and living community. Ron enjoyed living in Downers Grove and was frequently seen wheeling about town. He participated in community activities and served as a voice for the handicap with the town council. Although he had physical limitations, Ron was an optimistic person, not given to complaint, and felt a role in speaking out against injustice. He was a man of great character, confirmed traditionalist, and lived his life in keeping with his family standards. Ron was loved dearly by his family and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Manor Care (600 W Ogden Ave, Hinsdale, Il) at 10:30 on June 23, 2012.

My belated condolences to the Dugan family. I found out just recently that he had passed away when speaking to some old friends reminiscing about DGS… Good memories!

I remember Mr. Dugan clearly from DGHS-S, third floor. He did not let physical limitations stop him! My sympathies to his family and his many, many students over so many years.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Dugan. I was a student of his back in the 70's and I always remembered him as a great teacher and a great inspiration.
