Robert Weiner Obituary

Dr. Robert S. Weiner, a retired cardio-thoracic surgeon who several decases ago had a medical practice Lowell, died Friday, April 23, at the Naples Community Hospital. He was the widower of Rita L. Weiner and the husband of Marie. Weiner.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., a son of the late Edward J. and Lillian Weiner of Lowell. A former Lowell resident, Dr. Weiner currently was living in Naples.

Dr. Weiner graduated from Harvard University in 1943, and Harvard Medical School in 1946. He interned at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston from June 1946 to September 1947, and during his military service, was a surgeon until 1949 at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine. Dr. Weiner then served as a research fellow in surgery at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital from 1949 to 1950.

In 1950, Dr. Weiner was named assistant surgeon at Harvard Medical School during his year of surgical research. He completed his general surgical training at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital (now Boston Medical Center). He also completed thoracic surgical training at Boston City Hospital.

Dr. Weiner then began a private practice in Lowell and also maintained a home in the city on Andover Street. He relocated to Rochester, N.Y. in 1961. He developed the cardiac service at Rochester General Hospital and also developed the first cardiopulmonary bypass apparatus at the hospital.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joseph Weiner and his wife, Dr. Yvette Starer of Tenafly, N.J.; three grandsons, Steven, David and Jeffrey Weiner, all of Tenafly, N.J.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Susan B. Weiner and her husband Alan C. Lewis of Newton, Mass.; and a sister, Charlotte S. Weiner of Chelmsford.

Dr. Weiner's funeral services took place on Monday, April 26, in Hackensack, N.J.
