Robert A. Powers
Deerfield
Robert A. Powers, 83, of Deerfield, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2009 at St. Lukes Hospital. Robert was born in Ogdensburg, NY on September 18, 1926, the son of the late Donald A. and Marguerite (MacDonald) Powers. Roberts family moved to Rome, NY when he was a young boy, where he received his education and was a graduate of Rome Free Academy. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS Tucson. During this time, he was inducted into the Sacred Order of The Dragon. After the war Robert was employed with Savage Arms Co., then later until his retirement, the Utica Observer Dispatch in Herkimer and Utica. Robert was a parishioner of St. Peters Church, North Utica, the American Legion Post #229, North Utica, the Deerfield Democratic Club, and the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Dept. where he served as deputy chief in 1966 and was a former member of the Firematics Team. At one time he served on the Deerfield Town Planning Board. Robert was an avid hunter and hockey fan. Robert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Clarence Penree of Deerfield; a son, Daniel Powers of Chadwicks; five grandchildren, Brian C. Koscielniak, Matthew R. Koscielniak, Daniel R. Powers, Diane C. Powers and Danielle C. Powers; a brother-in-law, Donald Steves, North Utica; a sister-in-law, Jean Brower, TX and several nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and David Powers. Mr. Powers funeral with Military Honors will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 9:15 from the Heintz Funeral Home, 408 Herkimer Rd., North Utica and at 10:00 from St. Peters Church, North Utica. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday(Today) from 4-8. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of St. Lukes ICU and the Heritage Healthcare for all the loving care given to Robert.
