Robert Hanson Obituary

Robert G. Hanson Bob Hanson passed away December 12, 2006 in Oakland, CA, where he was born and lived for most of his 77 years, preceded in death by his partner of 34 years, Michael Russell, in 1991. Bob served in the US Army in the early 1950s as a medic in a M.A.S.H. unit in Korea. Bob's love of beautiful and interesting objects and art supported his career as an antique dealer. Although he closed his shop in Berkeley 25 years ago he continued his search for things that pleased him, which also included music, food and the perfect greeting card. (He once sent a condolence card, prophetically appropriate, to married friends on their anniversary.) To those of us who knew him, and there are many, Bob was a most unique man, a true individual who brought his individualism to every aspect of his life and taught many of us by his example to be able to rely on our own truth. His almost complete lack of guile and phoniness in conducting his life and relationships will stand as an example to us who remain. Unfortunately, he is now teaching us about separation and grief. Anyone wishing to may make a donation in memory of Bob Hanson to Crown Jewel Club, PO Box 1000, El Segundo, CA 90245 /www.crownjewelclub.org.

Bob, I miss you still and all the wonderful times we spent together. I would give anything to sit at your table, listening to jazz, playing Spite and Malice after a wonderful dinner. I learned so much about being an antique dealer with my shop next to yours in the last years you had your uniquely wonderful shop on Ashby and Adeline. You will always share a place in my heart.
