It has been nearly one month since my brother left us. I still can't believe that he is gone from us. I will continue to say to myself.."Oh I must remember to tell Rich that."
I will continue to miss his laugh and big smile. How will I get through Thanksgiving morning without him arriving hours early to help me peel potatoes and set up? He has been my buddy since I was three years old.
I know that he is now with Barbara and our mom and dad. As I sit at the wooden family table that was my parents', where we had so many family meals, I can feel Rich there with me. It is all comforting.
Thank you all who have submitted entries in this Guest Book. My brother was a quite and honorable man. Your comments are a tribute to him. Good Bless....Judy Powell

I am saddened by the passing of a good friend, and I said a prayer for him in church last Sunday the day of his burial, and I know he will be missed, but my thoughts return to the good times we shared from childhood thru adolescence, like the many games of “horse” basketball in his backyard, and the times we thought we were great high jumpers by leaping over sawhorses onto mattresses he found in or around his garage. I remember him and I helping his mom prepare fresh peas for canning and “Dick” had to stop about halfway through to have a peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich, first time I had ever heard of such a thing. And the times we went down into his basement to catch a quick “smoke” which were hidden in dark places up in the floor joists along with matches to light them. We were in the Boy Scouts together and wanted to go on the week long “Silver Moccasin Hike” over Mt. Baden Powell but according to the rules we were to young to go, our defense was we might be younger but we were just a big or bigger than the other kids, the scoutmaster through the regional headquarters got us permission to make the trek, what a time that was. I recall the times after he got his drivers license he persuaded his parents to let him drive his sister Judy’s car, against her best wishes , that pea green Chevy Coupe, somewhere around a 1947, with vacuum assist shift on the column, it was a very plain car but it had a “brodie knob” on the steering wheel and boy did that make it easier to slide around corners, in fact so easy I remember doing “360’s” twice with Dick at the wheel, oops! I remember running out onto the field at the end of halftime and seeing Dick in his North High School Marching Band uniform proudly playing his trumpet. Once he went with me and my family on a week long vacation up to Bass Lake, Dick and I rented an aluminum canoe and started paddling across the lake, past the halfway point two rivets on the bottom right in the middle of the boat popped loose, we knew we were sinking and was going to die but we paddled our butts off and we made it to shore and walked the thing around the lake back to the rental place and got our money back. I have many more memories of Richard and it makes a person wonder how good friends can lose contact over the years. Rest in peace Richard and know you are loved and missed and we’ll see ya down the road.
God Bless

I am very sorry for your loss.
Dick was a great friend with whom I enjoyed many wonderful experiences during the years at Seaside and North High.
Although I have not seen Dick in a number of years, I have spoken to him from time to time throughout the years.
He will be sorely missed.

Richard (Dick in his younger days) was also a fellow Seaside Elementary grad in 1955. We were both trumpet players (at least he was). He and I and Jack Larkins played a trumpet trio at our 8th grade graduation. Richard, Jack and I all joined the band at North. I have a photo of him in a group of Boy Scouts preparing to go on the Silver Mocassin hike in about 1954, taken at El Retiro Park. Dennis Berry, another Seasider and NHS grad, is also in the photo.
Richard had joined a group of several of us Saxons for informal mini-reunions in the past few years. He attended the previous reunions in 2001 and 2003. He will be greatly missed by those of us that knew him.
