Ralph Garwood Obituary

Ralph J. Garwood

Born: May 12, 1915

Died: May 5, 2015

Ralph Joseph Garwood, 99, of Glen Ellyn, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 5, 2015.

He was born on May 12, 1915, in Philadelphia, PA to Emily Fallon and Joseph Garwood. Ralph was the loving father of Ellen Garwood, San Rafael, CA, and Steve (Terri) Garwood of Glen Ellyn, adoring grandfather of Andrew and Alec, and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Emily and Florence; and wife, Toni Garwood (nee Budinger).

As a 58 year resident of Glen Ellyn he was active as a youth baseball coach and volunteer at St. Petronille Church. He will be remembered for his quick dry wit, generous spirit, and enjoyment of political discussions. During World War II he served from April 1942-December 1945 in the Army as a first lieutenant. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Upon moving to Chicago after the war he worked as a manufacturer's rep in the fancy food industry until he retired in 1980. Some of his hobbies included playing golf and bridge, woodworking, reading, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events.

A memorial service will be held at Leonard Memorial Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn on May 13, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be said at St. Petronille Church, 420 Glenwood Ave., Glen Ellyn on May 14, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery in Wheaton.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Boys Town, 14100 Crawford St., Boys Town, NE 68010.

I managed the condominium complex where Ralph lived, and I found him to be a lovely person. He was always pleasant and looking forward to his next golf game. RIP Ralph, and condolences to his family.

Ralph was my drinking buddy...coffee that is...at the McD's Kaffe Klatch in Carol Stream. I loved talking with him about WWII...when I could get him to talk about it. He was generous to give me some of his WWII books which I've read and cherish in his memory. Our grandsons played V-ball together at Glenbard West and I enjoyed sitting with Ralph and Steve in the stands cheering the Hitters on. Steve and I just returned from Ralph's gravesite at Assumption Cemetery, where he has the nicest military plaque in memory of one of our heroes, who would of course never say so. Peace to his memory. God's rest to his soul.
