Peter Safar Obituary

SAFAR
PETER J.
Age 79, of Mt. Lebanon, PA, died on the 3rd day of August, 2003. A prominent physician and activist, he was first and foremost a loving husband and father. His thirst for knowledge, zest for life, compassion for the ill and tenacity to accomplish missions will forever be remembered by family, friends and professional colleagues. He was born on April 12, 1924 in Vienna, Austria to Dr. Karl Safar, a prominent ophthalmologist, and Dr. Vinca Safar, a pediatrician. Having survived the horrors of World War II, his good fortune for the gift of life became a driving force in his professional and personal lives. He married Eva Safar in 1950, and they embarked on a lifelong journey together first to America, and then later to Peru, South America. For the past forty years, his numerous professional positions and accomplishments were centered around the University of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife and lifelong partner, Eva and sons Philip (Linda) and Paul. He was the father of the late Elizabeth Safar, and brother of the late Hannah Stepanik. He is survived by the promise of the next generation, his grandchildren, Katherine, Anne, Meryl, Julian and Chloe. Also survived by family members in Vienna. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate his life. A public ceremony will follow at a later date. The family request gifts in lieu of flowers and memorial contributions to be made to support continuing the exploration of life by donating to: The Safar Center for Resuscitation Research, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Attn: Aaron Roach, PO Box 131 Scaife Hall, 3550 Terrace St., Pgh, PA 15261 Arrangements by LAUGHLIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL www.laughlinfuneralhome.com

I speak on behalf of every Emergency Medical Practitioner when I say that it is heavy on the heart that your husband, Father and friend has passed away. The tools in which he has passed on to us have saved countless lives and have given so many a second chance to spend more time with their loved ones. He will always be a truly great man.

To the Family of Dr. Peter Safar,

It was indeed my great privilege to work for Dr. Safar. More than this, it was a joy to have known him. Be assured that his passing is an immeasurable loss to his colleagues, to the University, to the international scientific community, and to the World.

May this certainty comfort you, and may God sustain you in your present sorrow.

Worked for your husband and father when I began my career in medicine twenty-nine years ago, what a wonderful man. He inspired me to keep on going. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
