Dr. Ries was one of my favorite professors who charmed us with his slides of Fayetteville and his sensitive stories of reaching for his wife's coffee cup from the floor when she was pregnant because she couldn't reach! Besides geographic endeavors, he taught humility and compassion for others in our work with teams. Life lessons long remembered. Thank you Dr. Ries for being the brilliant you and for all you gave to your students. God bless you and your family in their time of loss. Rest In Peace. Your fan from Class of '77

I was a student at Elmhurst College from 1969 to 1973. Paul was my adviser freshman year. I was a biology major the first year. Paul sold me on a degree in Geography. Paul was kind, smart, and an excellent teacher. Although I never pursued Geography academically. I used the knowledge gained from Paul and his colleauges almost daily as a dairy farmer, Town Planning Committee member and citizen of the world. I'll always consider Paul as my mentor. I called Paul a few years ago to catch up. We talked for quite a while. Our conversation was as comfortable as it was in college. He will be greatly missed.
