Patricia Michaels Obituary

Patricia Hoglund Michaels, nee Patricia Ann Price, died on Thursday morning, October 28, 2010 at LaGrange Memorial Hospital as a result of complications following a surgical procedure which she underwent the previous day. Her daughter, Anne Hoglund DeSimone and her son-in-law, Berardo DeSimone, of Clarendon Hills, were with her when she passed away. In August 4, Patricia "Pat" turned 90 and celebrated with many friends and family at a special party given in her honor by her children at Chew Chew Restaurant in Riverside. Pat lived in Riverside since childhood. Along with her parents, Morris and Louise Price, and her older brother, Robert, they lived at 135 Akenside Road. She attended Central School, the Riverside Junior High School, and was a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School, where she served as Student Council President during her senior year. She went on to attend National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, where she obtained an undergraduate degree in Education in 1942. She then taught second grade in Oak Park for several years. In 1944, Pat married John Hoglund, also a 1938 graduate of Riverside-Brookfield High School, whom she had known since junior high school. Together, they raised three children in Riverside (besides their daughter Anne, they also had two sons, Steven and Mark). John Hoglund died in 1983, just three months before they would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Pat re-married in 1984. Her second husband, Earl Michaels ("Mike"), was also a 1938 graduate of R-B High School. Mike died in 1996. Pat was prominent in local, county, and statewide Republican Party activities during the 1960s and 1970s. In the early 1960s, she was instrumental in establishing Riverside's Republican Headquarters, in order to publicize and promote Republican candidates for offices at all levels of government. From 1964 to 1974, she served as Riverside Township's Republican Committeewoman. As Township Committeewoman, she not only worked with the Township Committeeman to organize local Republican programs and activities, but she also worked with fellow Committeewomen from other communities in Cook County. Emerging as a leader among Republican women at the county level, she was appointed in 1968 as Vice Chairwoman of the Women's Division of the Republican Central Committee, and she became Chairwoman in 1972. In 1974, she was elected to be Riverside Township Republican Committeeman, and she served as Committeeman until 1982. Pat had many other community involvements during her long life in Riverside. She was a member of the Riverside Garden Club for many years, and she was active in Riverside Infant Welfare, the Fortnightly Club, and Riverside Lions Club. During the years 1993-2005, she derived particular pleasure from serving as a volunteer in the library at Blythe Park School in Riverside, where she read stories to the first, second, and third grade children. Pat also possessed considerable artistic talents. During the 1960s, her medium was oil painting. In the 1970s, she completely re-decorated the dollhouse that her daughter Anne had by that time outgrown, and she also created a number of shadow box displays for family and friends. More recently, Pat created drawings and paintings with colored pencils and watercolors. At the time of her death, she still attended weekly oil painting classes in Riverside. Patricia Hoglund Michaels will be greatly missed by her children, Steven, Anne (Berardo) DeSimone, and Mark; by her grandsons, Jared Hoglund, Aaron Hoglund, and Todd (Anne Marie) DeSimone; by her nephew, Robert Price; and by all the friends and acquaintances she has made during her many years living in Riverside. A memorial service was held at the Riverside Presbyterian Church. Donations in Pat's memory to the Riverside Public Library or People Care Inc. of Riverside would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home Riverside. www.ivinsfh.com.

So sorry to hear about "Patty" passing. She was a childhood friend who also babysat my sister and I. In the early '30's we lived at 125 Akenside Road and I remember seeing and hearing radio for the first time with her older brother, Bob, up in their attic. Condolences also from my brother, Howard Hughes, and sister, Shirley Hughes Scott.

Mom once called Gov Ogilvie to ask about balloons for a political event, and he got after her for bothering him, bur it didn't seem to hurt her "career" in politics. Steve Hoglund. Washington D.C.
