Murray J. Martin Jr., 76, of Chambersburg and formerly of Newville, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in his home.
He was born March 21, 1930, in Newville, the son of the late Murray J. Sr. and Margette Brockhouse Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Wolfe Varner Martin. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Dolores M. Martin.
He retired in 1966 from the U.S. Navy, after having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a retired employee of the Carlisle School District with 16 years of service.
Mr. Martin belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Newville. He was a member of AM Vets 224; American Legion Post 223; Moose Lodge 842; VFW Post 7343; the Minnequa Club in Shippensburg; the White Circle of Carlisle; the Retired Enlisted Association, and was a life member of PSEA.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John M. Martin of Wantage, N.J., and James E. Martin of Newville; a sister, Nancy Clugston of Elkton, Md.; three stepdaughters; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a son, Richard G. Martin, and a sister, Emily Gutshall.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday June 27, in the Egger Funeral Home, 15 Big Spring Ave., Newville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, in the Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Ruff officiating. Burial will follow in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle, with military honors.
