Mildred Drew Obituary

Mildred "Millie" Drew was born on January22, 1914, and died on November 25, 2012, less than one month before her 99th birthday. She was born and raised in Downers Grove, and she and her brother Donald lived more than 90years in the family home built by their grandfather. Millie was a greatly admired English teacher and counselor. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and her Master's Degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Mildred's first teaching job was in Iowa. After returning to Downers Grove, she subsequently taught English at Hawthorne Elementary Grade School and served as Girl's Counselor at Sandburg Junior High, both schools in Elmhurst, Illinois. Mildred and Donald enjoyed all aspects of nature throughout their lives and supported many charitable organizations, such as needy children and protection of the environment and wildlife. They also loved cats, giving home to many strays over their lifetimes. Mildred loved traveling abroad, including trips to the British Isles and Hawaii. She was active on church committees, was a board member of the D.G. Concert Association, sang with the D.G. Choral Society, and volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital for many years. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of Beta Kappa Gamma Sorority. At the time of her passing, Mildred was a member of First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove. Previously, Mildred attended the Congregational Church in Downers Grove where her brother Donald was organist for 48years. Following his retirement from that position, they returned to First United Methodist Church, the church of their youth. Mildred was predeceased by her brothers Donald and Howard; and by her parents, Olive (nee Lamb) and Thomas Drew. "She touched many lives even up until her passing with her kind spirit and willingness to listen. She will be highly missed." A Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church (1302 Maple Ave, DG) at 10:30a.m. on Friday, November30. Visitation will begin prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Seasons Hospice, 606PotterRd, Des Plaines, IL 60016.Arrangements by Toon Funeral Home. For more information www.toonfuneralhome.com or 630-968-0408

She was a beautiful lady. She was my Aunt Peggy's best friend. I spent a summer visiting them both in 1955.

Mildred Drew was the last of a generation. She was the last surviving granddaughter of James Drew who came to Downers Grove in 1848. She and Donald were part of my family, my father's cousins. I remember them both with fondness.
