Michael Evers Obituary

Michael John Evers, age 55, of Brookfield. Navy veteran, labor lawyer, activist and dear friend and mentor to many. Beloved husband of Cheryl, and fond father of Alexander and Miles Evers. Dear brother to William, Patrick and Timothy. Michael left this world on Sunday, September 11, 2011; the victim of a motorcycle accident. Michael was born on June 21, 1956 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the second of four boys born to John and Rebecca Evers. Michael grew up in Redding, California and graduated from Enterprise High School in 1974. Upon graduation, he joined the US Navy where he served honorably as a Medical Corpsman. After leaving the Navy, he then settled down in Eureka, CA where he eventually met and married his wife of 27 years, Cheryl Ann (nee Mulcahy). This union brought forth two wonderful boys. Michael attended Humboldt State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Public Administration. He worked his way through college as a psychiatric technician at Humboldt County Mental Health Services. Later he moved on to become the representative and champion of County workers, local AFLCIO. Michael then spent a year living in Sacramento as Assistant to the Chairman of the California Ways and Means Committee, before returning to Eureka. Michael later chose to pursue his passion for the law, by moving to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he received his Jurist Doctorate from Wake Forest University in 1994. After becoming a lawyer, Michael moved to Chicago, IL where he eventually became a partner of Elfenbaum, Evers and Amarilio. Michael received the NAACP President's award, was counselor to the IWW, served on the Board of Directors of the Way Back Inn, represented thousands of people, laborers and utility workers and founded the Hatchets and Gasoline society of lawyers. Utilizing his extreme wit and unusual sense of humor, Michael served his community by helping others, acting as counselor, mentor, and friend to many. Michael is pre-deceased by both his parents, and is survived by his wife Cheryl Ann, his son Alexander William, his son Miles Murphy and brothers William, Patrick, and Timothy. In lieu of flowers, the Evers' family requests that donations be made to: The Way Back Inn, 1915 West Roosevelt Road, Broadview, Illinois 60155 [email protected]. I lost track of Mike after high school but it looks like our paths almost crossed in several states. We were near neighbors it looks like in a couple of places and had similar interests and passions. I regret not bumping into him. It would have been a real joy and was very proud to hear all that he accomplished.

Mike and I had a mutual friend Ed Albert. In fact Mike kind of hand me Ed Albert when Mike left Humboldt County and told me he would be a good friend. Ed Albert died in May 2010. At the time I emailed Mike about Ed's death.

I stumbled upon Mike reply to me just now and thought it prophetic:

"Ah, hell. It was just like him to take the smartest exit. Two things are purely true about Ed. First, unconditional generosity was the essence of his soul. Second, he stopped and smelled the roses carefully, making sure to understand and appreciate the secret beauty that lay below and behind what commonly dazzled. Rest well, Mr. Albert. Save us a seat We're all coming soon."

I received a phone call less than an hour ago telling me that Michael died six weeks ago,so I am still in shock. I think people assumed that I had heard but, unfortunately, this was not the case. Judi and I left town on a 3,300 mile road trip the morning after, it turns out, that Mike died. I feel so sad. He was such a great friend to me when he & Cheryl lived here in Eureka. My deepest sympathies to Cheryl & their sons. I'm not sure what else to say right now ...

10-8-11 Mike, Cheryl, Alex and Murphy- Mike, your passing is our world's great loss, and the next world's great gain, wherever or whatever that may be. I fondly recall our times together at Enterprise High School, and working (well, sometimes working) at the Red Lion Motel with Dowight, Larry, and Rod Wiburg. I will never forget your graciousness and hospitality when we visited with you in Chicago with my wife Sally and my sister Heidi. I will always remember your smile, humor, charm and compassion. We will never forget you. God bless you and your family.

Your pal forever, Alex

I remember Mike reciting the Gettysburg Address in 5th grade. A requirement he relished. The west side gang will miss you.

I just heard the horrible news of Mike's death.
He and I attended elementary school together, and at 11, he was my first official "boyfriend". He was a sweet boy with a great mind and wonderful sense of humor; serious and wise beyond his years.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and loved ones for your loss. I am so very sorry. He was truly a special guy. The world is less without him.
