Mary Walker Obituary

MURRELLS INLET -- Mary Marion Smith Walker passed away on March 26 at her home, Sunnyside on Murrells Inlet at age 97. She was born in Marion in 1905. A third generation Scot, she was the youngest daughter of Henry Gilmore Smith and Ida O. Kirton Smith. She moved to Murrells Inlet with her family in 1910.

The widow of William Arthur Walker, she is survived by daughter Arden Inabinette and husband Wayne: granddaughter Rachel and Sid Mullins and grandson, David Inabinette; several first cousins and many niece and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, sisters, Buelah Ida Smith, Julia Inez Smith and Nancy Esther Smith King; brothers, Luther Henry Smith and Ashby Gilmore Smith.

She was a graduate of Confederate College high school in Charleston; attended Coker College on a piano scholarship and graduated from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She did post graduate work at the University of South Carolina in education and in German. She taught elementary school for 41 years in Hamer, Socastee, Chester and Myrtle Beach.

She was a lifetime member of both the South Carolina and National Education Association. She was a founding member of Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church.

She was an avid reader, a lifetime learner, an artist, a poet, a lover of nature and the environment and an avid daylily gardener and hybridizer.

A memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church and visitation following in the fellowship hall.

Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may to made to Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church, PO Box 418, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576, Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 North Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29440 or Georgetown County Habitat for Humanity.
