Mary Jane Later "Pat" Rehm

Mary Rehm Obituary

Mary Jane "Pat" Later Rehm, April 30, 1920-November 5, 2008, a native of Evanston, a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, and a proud Chicagoan, Pat succumbed to a four-year battle with cancer. Pat married her husband, Edward L. Rehm, on August 7, 1943 and together they raised a family of six children in Glen Ellyn. Her happiest moments were when her family was gathered together, and her proudest achievements were those as a mother. As she liked to say, "I've had six kids-and a couple of them turned out pretty well." Pat was a world-class knitter, a skilled bridge player, a sports fan, and an avid reader. Since retiring 25 years ago, she kept active as a volunteer at the Chicago Historical Society and as a docent at the Art Institute. At her neighborhood church, she taught adults how to read and she always had a special place in her heart for those less fortunate. She cheered for the Cubs all summer and cheered even harder for Notre Dame in the fall. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling the country and rediscovering Chicago with her long time companion, George Martin Sus. Surviving Pat are her brother Phillip Later; her children Mary Jane Rehm, Ted Rehm, Joan Rehm, Bill Rehm and Marjie Ridge; and her grandchildren, Beth O'Malley, Jeff Pagni, Brad Kosar, Jenny Kosar, Zach Rehm and Lani Rehm. Her husband, Edward L. Rehm and son, John Rehm predeceased her. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 15, at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 1431 North Park Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60610. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church or to Immaculate Conception Scholarship Fund.

I have such pleasant memories of playing in the big kitchen in Glen Ellyn and Pat would be quickly knitting, she was light hearted and funny, attributes a child warms to, appreciates and remembers. My sympathies and prayers to her loving family.

I will truly miss Pat's laughter and our conversations. She told me on occasion that Chocolate makes her feel happy. I first met Pat with Martin for the official World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. on May 29, 2004. It was a nice gift of friendship during the next 4 years.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Pat. My memory of Aunt Pat is visiting her house in Glen Ellyn and having her say,"I will race you to the store for donuts" How much fun!!! On one of those visits i was given some china horse figurines by one of her daughters. I still have them. Please accept my condolences on the passing of your Mom.

Bridge and "Alfie's" were things that I enjoyed with Pat. Many times her 'words of wisdom' helped me get through some tough moments. Her humor and kindness I will never forget.

I have fond memories of Aunt Pat. When we did not have a penny to our names, Aunt Pat would show up at our house in Glen Ellyn with a box of donuts. We had many great Christmas dinners with Pat at our house. She will be missed by all of us.

I have great memories of staying at Aunt Pat's home in Glen Ellyn and playing cards with Joan for hours; climbing to the attic to check out old prom dresses; playing with cousins and having fun in a very lively household. Aunt Pat had lots of energy and kept everyone moving.

Pat was a dear friend & neighbor. We're so glad we were able to catch up for lunch a few times after she moved from our building. We loved seeing her & Marty, they were always such an inspiration. Pat, we'll miss you - may God bless you!
