Mary Jones Obituary

On May 30, 2011 Mary Jean "MJ" Jones passed away after a courageous journey with breast cancer. MJ, 45 years old, of Riverside, was the beloved wife of David Matthew Jones; loving mother of Allyson Reilly Jones, Brendan Kerry Jones and Ryan Joseph Jones. She was the loving daughter of Dorothea Jean Beetel, and the late Robert John Beetel, Jr.; fond daughter-in-law of Donald L. Jones. MJ adored her three brothers, Kevin (Mary Beth), Kerry (Karen) and Robert Beetel. She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Mike (Jill) and Doug Jones. By her passion for life, caring for others, strength and spirituality, MJ left a deep impression upon those whose path she crossed. She took these qualities onto the playing field of Notre Dame where she lettered and served as captain of the University's field hockey team. MJ applied her passion for spirituality and literature towards her career in publishing working at University of Notre Dame Press, Noble Press and Loyola Press. One of her greatest professional accomplishments was working closely with the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin on the publication of his seminal spiritual book on life and death, The Gift of Peace. Thirteen years ago, MJ gave birth to three beautiful children. Ending her professional career, MJ chose to focus her passions on family, friends and community, touching countless lives. Four and a half years ago, MJ was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Throughout her battle with breast cancer, MJ thrived, traveling extensively, forming lasting memories with family and friends all while caring for her family. Of note, she spent countless hours mentoring other women on their breast cancer journey, fulfilling her vow of being a positive witness to others in their struggles. MJ showed those around her how to live and to die with strength, dignity and peace. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 3 P.M. to 8 P.M. and Friday, June 3, 2011 from11:30 A.M. until 12 Noon at Hitzeman Funeral Home, Ltd. 9445 W. 31st Street, Brookfield. Funeral services will be held on Friday June 3rd at 12 Noon proceeding to St. Mary Church, Riverside for a 1 P.M. Mass. Interment will be private at the Upper Springfield Township Cemetery, New Jersey. Memorials appreciated to MJ Shining Stars, 300 N. Delaplaine Road, Riverside, IL 60546, a 501(c)3 foundation dedicated to helping children afford a Catholic education at Saint Mary of Riverside, Illinois and Saint Mary of Bordentown, NJ parish schools. Although I never met MJ, my sister Caitie often spoke fondly of her. I know she was a wonderful mother and good friend to her neighbors. What a nice example she set for her community and family.
Sending lots of prayers for her family. She will be missed!

Like many people we remember Mary Jean for her smile and upbeat personality. Even in the difficult times she was always "fine" when asked how she was. We rememer her as mother and wife, thinking of her family first. We will miss her especially at Christmas time at the Christmas Eve Party where she helped the kids make their christmas cookies. We all know there is another angel in Heaven. Love, Aunt Rose and Uncle Warren

Dave, Ally, Ryan, and Brendan - we're sending prayers of strength and peace your way. Sincerely, Ruta, Tadas Kulbis and kids, Kovas, Vidas, Lukas, Vasara, and Rytas

I will always remember Mary Jean's beautiful smile, sparkling eyes, and the way she would cry when she laughed really hard -- which was often! What a joy she was to be with! It seemed that she genuinely lived life to the fullest, enjoying every moment as a gift from God, and she packed a whole lot of "life" into her 45 years. She was obviously a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, and no one who was blessed to know her could ever forget her. She is an inspiration to all through her faith, courage, and dignity, and my prayers go out to her family for God's presence in the wake of her absence.

We will never forget how you welcomed us in as new school parents at St. Mary's. We were strangers to you, but you extended yourself and immediately put us at ease and made us feel welcome. While we weren't lucky enough to know you long, that action speaks volumes to the special person you were. We will continue to pray for you, Dave, and the kids. God bless.
