Mary Cosentino Obituary

Mary Cosgrove Cosentino, educator, health care lawyer, patient advocate. Age, 55, an adjunct professor of law at Loyola University Chicago's Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy, and health care lawyer, died of cancer January 26th at her home in Western Springs. After graduating from Fontbonne College, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1974 and St. Louis University School of Law in 1978, Ms. Cosentino joined the legal department of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, the national trade association for Catholic hospitals and long-term care facilities, located in St. Louis. In 1980, she became one of the first full-time health lawyers in the health law group of the Chicago law firm of Gardner Carton & Douglas. She later served as general counsel of St. Joseph Hospital and Health Care Center in Chicago. Ms. Cosentino taught health law and other subjects at Loyola University Chicago since 1988. Ms. Cosentino has also served as a director of the Illinois Association of Hospital Attorneys and as a member of the National Legal Committee of the Catholic Health Association of the United States. In the community, Ms. Cosentino served on the St. John of the Cross School Board, and as chair of the swim and dive committee of the La Grange Field Club. Through her illness, Ms. Cosentino became an advocate for cancer victims of asbestos exposure, helping to educate mesothelioma patients on the disease and encouraging them to take an active role in their own treatment. She served on the board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and worked with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and other lawmakers to spur federal funding for medical research on asbestos-related cancers and to promote the passage of federal legislation to ban asbestos in the United States. She loved to watch her three sons James, Peter, and Timothy compete on the basketball court, at water polo games, and at swim meets at Lyons Township High School. Despite her many professional accomplishments, she viewed the raising of her sons into fine, young men as her best and most enduring work, according to her husband Bob to whom she was married for 26 years. James is a senior in engineering at Washington University in St. Louis; Peter is a freshman majoring in physical therapy at St. Louis University; and Timothy is a senior at Lyons Township High School. In addition to her husband and three children, Ms. Cosentino is survived by her sister Colleen (Greg) Goodman, of Western Springs, Illinois, her brother John (Margaret) Cosgrove, of St. Louis, Missouri, her brother-in-law Jay (Becky) Cosentino, of Lisle, Illinois, her brother-in-law Paul (Nuran) Cosentino, of Boynton Beach, Florida, her sister-in-law Carolyn (Jeff) Bonistalli, of Western Springs, Illinois, and 11 nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers memorials to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, PO BOX 91840, Santa Barbara, CA 93190-1840 or Doctors Without Borders, appreciated. Funeral arrangments handled by Hallowell & James Funeral Home, (708) 352-6500.

Dear Bob and Mary's family,

We have fond memories of Mary's wonderful personality and exuberance throughout our law school years. Mary not only kept her spirits high with a positive, perserving attitude, but also of those around her.

Anne joins me in extending our deepest sympathy, and we send you our warm personal regards,

To Mary's dear family,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I went to Cor Jesu with Mary. She was so bright, beautiful and kind in high school and it seems those qualities were exemplified as she grew in adulthood. I am certain that her sons have been greatly blessed by her presence enough to carry her spirit forward as they live their lives. God bless all of you. Rosie Monteleone (Queathem)

Dear Family,
Mary was one of my teachers at Loyola Law School's Master of Juris Prudence in Health Law. She had strong convictions, but always listened to students with opposing views. She was a wonderful role model and an inspiration to me. She was dedicated to making the world a more just and fair place and always spoke highly of her family. She will be sorely missed. Dear Bob and family, We send you our love and prayers. Mary was a pillar of strength and a committed her life to her family and the advancement of research to find a cure for mesotheloma. She served with bravery on the board of the Meso Foundation and championed the goal of serving patients with meso from all over the US, She volunteered for clinical trials herself and in so doing "lead from the front"during her 5 year battle with meso. Her kindness and strength will always be remembered.

Dear Cosentino Family:

God Bless All of You. I worked with Mary at Loyola University Chicago School of Law. She was always smiling and a joy to work with. After I was diagnosed with breast cancer, Mary provided widsom, comfort and understanding as I went through my battles with chemotherapy. She kept me updated on the latest trials and shared with me her experiences. I will always remember Mary as the woman who fought the battle of this dreadful disease. She did so with courage and no complaint. She will always be remembered by me as a phenomenal woman. May the repose of her soul rest in peace.

Sincerely,

Shawn Mercer-Dixon
