MARGARET MAHONEY Obituary

MAHONEY--Margaret E. The Board of Directors and staff at American Skin Association (ASA) mourn the passing of its longtime friend and Board member -- Margaret E. Mahoney. For nearly two decades, Margaret was an active member of our Board and her advice and leadership were invaluable. Margaret devoted her career to work with philanthropies on issues concerning health, education, arts and humanities. ASA was fortunate to have Margaret as a member of our Education Council for many years and under her leadership, ASA was able to launch its award-winning public school program “The Wonders of Skin: Looking Good, Being Healthy. Margaret's efforts reached over 12 million children, teachers and parents. “Her dedication, leadership, and advocacy for children's education will never be forgotten said Howard P. Milstein, Chairman of ASA's Board. Margaret was the first woman to head a major foundation, The Commonwealth Fund, a national philanthropic foundation in New York City, where she had a distinguished career. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Margaret graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University and holds many honorary degrees from the nation's most prestigious universities. Margaret truly made a difference. ASA extends our heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends and colleagues. We will miss her. Howard P. Milstein Chairman Barbara A. Margaret was also a founding board member of the CDC Foundation of which I am President and CEO. She served as our second Board chair and, in that role, was both a wise mentor to me and was very instrumental in setting a strategic direction for the CDC Foundation that led to great success. To many of us in the Foundation world, Ms. Mahoney was truly the Grand Dame of Philanthropy in this country. She was a very wise woman, a Thinker, who used carefully chosen words to convey her keen thoughts with great precision. She will be deeply missed by many.
