Laura Smedley Obituary

Laura Jean Shuler Smedley, age 78, of Bluewater Bay, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 23, 2007, at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center with her family by her side. She went peacefully and was in no pain.
Jean Smedley was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Edwin Smedley, mother, Lula Tolbert, father, Moran Shuler and a brother, Frank Shuler.
She is survived by her son David Smedley and his wife Vivian of Nashville, Tenn., daughter, Martha Vaughn of Destin, Fla., brother, Cecil Shuler and his wife Dorcas of Nashville, and her four granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachel Smedley of Nashville and Michele and Mary Vaughn of Niceville, Fla.
Jean was a lifelong educator and was a teacher for many years. She was adored by many students. She was a graduate of David Lipscomb College in 1951 and received two post-graduate degrees, a Master's and Ph.D from the University of Tennessee.
Jean Smedley will always be remembered for her love, patience and strength. She overcame many obstacles and put up an extraordinary fight with her sickness, but decided it was time to go home. The world lost a very intelligent, loving woman that will forever be in our hearts.
Jean and Louis raised their children in Nashville. Jean later moved to Niceville, after Louis passed away. She was a resident of Niceville and a member of Niceville Church of Christ for 14 years.
A memorial service will held at 6 p.m. at Niceville Church of Christ, 801 East John Sims Parkway, on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, with Ken Stanley officiating. She will be laid to rest in Hillsboro Cemetery in Coffee County, Tenn., beside her husband, Louis.
Twin Cities Cremation and Funeral Services is entrusted with the arrangements. You may sign the guest book and leave memories at www.twincitiescremationsfunerals.com.

A gentle wind blew cross the land
Reaching out to take a hand
For on the winds the angels came
Calling out a mother's name.

Left behind, the children's tears
Loving memories of the years
Of joy and love, a life well spent
And now to God a mother's sent.

On angel's wings, a heavenly flight
The journey home, towards the light
To those who weep, a life is gone
But in God's love, 'tis but the dawn.
