Kathy Nybo Obituary

Kathy Nybo
Born: January 9, 1949
Died: July 28, 2023
Kathy Nybo (Rieman) was a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend to many who lived in Downers Grove since 1973. She was an avid quilter and decorated member of the Faithful Circle Quilting Guild where she developed many of her lifelong friends. As a founding member of The Friends of the Edwards House, she championed the historic preservation of many homes in Downers Grove. Kathy also volunteered with the Downers Grove Historical Society and helped teach others the history of her favorite village.
Kathy had an eclectic career working in many roles, but her favorite was when she worked for the Village of Downers Grove planning community events, and she especially enjoyed organizing the Heritage Fest and the annual 4th of July parade. Kathy also loved making photo albums and helping customers at her daughter Tina's business, D'Lara Photography, a staple of downtown Downers Grove for over a decade.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Tom Nybo. She is also survived by her three children and their spouses Tina and Spike Welch, Tommy and Sheri Nybo, and John and Sarah Tafoya Nybo. She leaves behind four beloved grandchildren who brightened her every day; Jake, and Lily Welch; and Christian and Jack Nybo.
As a child growing up in the south suburbs of Chicago as the oldest of ten siblings, she was loved by all and often viewed as another mother to many of her family. Her brothers Rich and Tom Rieman fondly remember how Kathy took them to the movies and the library.
In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a maple tree on your property in remembrance of Kathy, who eagerly anticipated the changing of colors each fall.
A celebration of life will be held at Maggiano's in Oak Brook on September 16th from 12-3.
