John Haiges Obituary

John Jacob Haiges Jr., age 94, went to heaven on July 18, 2012. He was born to Elizabeth and John Haiges on December 16, 1917 in Oak Park, IL, where he was raised. A graduate of Purdue University, John was employed for over 35 years as a paint chemist. A member of the "Greatest Generation", he earned the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. Army. John served mostly in the artillery during WWII from 1941-1945. He was stationed in army facilities in the U. S. and later in England, France and Germany. John also served his country in Alaska during the Korean War. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and an avid golfer and bowler. John was active in The Oak Park Evangelical Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. In his later years, Beacon Hill Retirement Community became John's home. There he made many friends and volunteered as a wing leader. John was preceded in death by his wife Pearl Haiges, sister Elizabeth Huddle, and sister Carolyn Haiges. He is survived by his sister Roberta Wisler of Farmington Hills, MI; son John (Linda) Haiges III of Northbrook, IL; daughter Roberta (Daniel) Nestor of Marana, AZ; grandchildren Heather (Nick) Tsihlis of Buffalo Grove, IL; Kristin (James) Wanken of Rosemount, MN; Marc (Nathalie) Nestor of Newport Beach, CA; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Beacon Hill in Lombard at 10:00 a.m. August 4, 2012. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery in Hillside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.
