John V. Day

1st Lt. John V. Day, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), of Wilmington, NC, formerly a longtime Hinsdale, IL resident, passed away on May 27, 2016 at his home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan J. Day. and his parents, Oscar and Mary Louise Day.

John, 78, was born in 1938 in Orange, NJ, but moved with his parents to Hinsdale soon after. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1956, then earned his BA in Philosophy from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1961. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and Air Force ROTC.

In July 1961 he married Susan Brooks, also of Hinsdale, and was deployed by the Air Force to Izmir, Turkey in November 1961, where he served as a Jupiter Missile Launch Officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After joining the 22nd Bomb Wing at March AFB in Riverside, CA, he was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in April 1964.

Upon returning to Chicago, he worked at the Harris Bank while completing an MBA at the University of Chicago. Relocating to Hinsdale in 1968, he joined the Trans Union Corporation, and later General Binding Corporation as Manager of Information Systems. At GBC he later held corporate Vice President roles in Distribution, Graphic Products, and Systems & Administration. He joined Hartmarx Corporation in Chicago in 1983 as Director of Information Systems, then completed his career as an independent management consultant to industrial products and consumer marketing companies. John enjoyed golf at the Glenview NAS course with fellow Pickwick Club members, friends, and his son.

In 2000 John and Susan retired to Wilmington, NC. After Susan's passing in 2007, John took great interest in preserving her gardens, leading to his North Carolina Extension Master Gardener SM certification through the New Hanover County Arboretum. He served as Secretary of Grove Point Plantation HOA and was Vice President at the time of his passing. John was a survivor of lung cancer and successfully managed type 1 diabetes for over five decades.

Survivors include brother, Edwin Day of Bellevue, WA; son, Orin Day (Karen); and grandson, Joseph "Joey" of Durham, NC; daughter, Susanne Day Yesse (Erich); granddaughter, Lilly; and grandson, Brooks "Teddy" of Jensen Beach, FL; and other dear relatives and friends.

Family and friends are requested to meet for graveside remembrance and interment of ashes Friday, September 9, 10:30 AM, Clarendon Hills Cemetery, 6900 Cass Avenue, Darien, IL, followed by lunch.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Day/ Ingraham/ Easton Transfer Student Scholarship, Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio.
