John Budilovsky Obituary

John Anthony Budilovsky, son of the late John August and Josephine (Fara) Budilovsky, born on July 6, 1916, passed peacefully on November 25, 2009 at age of 93. John was the first baby born at St. Anthony de Padua Hospital in Chicago. He was a dedicated son, loving husband and proud father. He lived life with enthusiasm participating fully in all areas where he could make a profound contribution to society, his family and friends. John holds the distinction of being the oldest and longest licensed Funeral Director in the State of Illinois. Following in his father's profession as an undertaker, he conducted wakes and funerals from the Budilovsky Funeral Home on Lawndale Ave in Chicago. He later built the first funeral home in Westchester, the Budilovsky Westchester Funeral Home, to which he transferred his business. Early in life John learned to appreciate his role in society when he became a member of the American Sokol Havlicek, where community, physical fitness, education and pride in his Bohemian heritage were fostered. He spent many evenings as a child listening to the music filling the air from the Sokol located two doors away, while his father held him close in his arms and together they danced in the moonlight. He attended Harrison High School and became a member of Athlon Philoi, the alumni club that kept him and his classmates in touch with each other for decades. After his father's untimely death, John attended Worsham Mortuary College and became a licensed funeral director. Due to his profession, he was exempt from the draft during World War II, but he was eager to do his part as a civilian to aid in the war effort. As a result of his dedication to his community and the comfort he rendered to the families of fallen soldiers, he was awarded a special citation by the Rudolph Tordy VFW Post. Never forgetting his love for music in early childhood, after the war, John regularly attended dances at the Trianon Ballroom and was an accomplished dancer. He was invited to be a member of the elite 400 Club. It is there he met the love of his life, Leona Turlo. They married on October 21, 1950, the very first Sweetest Day. They recently celebrated 59 years of a strong, vital and eternally romantic marriage. John was perpetually in motion as he ran his business and was as a member of numerous fraternal organizations including Kiwanis (past Lt. Governor), Westchester Chamber of Commerce (past president), and the Bohemian Funeral Directors Association (past president). Along with his active community involvement, his family always came first. He nurtured them and instilled in them the same values that he had in regard to responsibility, respectability and dependability. He had three children, his late son John (Lourdes) Budilovsky Jr. and twin daughters Jane (Richard) Zeck and Joan (Ben) Budlilovsky-Kuzniar. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Richard and Rebecca Zeck, Josephine Budilovsky, and Benjamin Kuzniar. From his book, Death Does Not Take a Holiday (2005), "Regardless of what we may face in our youth, life does go on until we ourselves come to the end of the rainbow."

To Lee, her daughters Joan and Jane and their families, I'm so sorry for your loss. Johnny was a wonderful man who will be missed by us all. I knew him for over 30 years and loved him. He was a part of my family too by choice. I'll always remember how proud he was of his family, how he made me laugh, and welcome he made me when I visited.
