John Anthony Obituary

John Anthony of Downers Grove, died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at home with his son Carl and daughter-in-law Cari by his side. John was a much loved father, grandfather and friend. He was born on October 28, 1930 in the same hospital as his future wife, Beryl Ann Gibb. The couple grew up on Staten Island, but did not meet until the summer of 1948 when John got Beryl's attention at the beach by tossing pebbles at her. They married in May of 1953 and John, a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, left for Korea shortly after. John and Beryl had a long and loving marriage and, in the end, only had to be separated for a little while. Beryl passed away in February of this year, three months shy of their 59th wedding anniversary. John held a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He enjoyed a long and successful career with Union Carbide as a research scientist. John had a great love of tennis, photography, and writing and he made many long lasting friendships with like minded enthusiasts. He is very much missed by his many friends and especially by his son Carl, his daughter-in-law Cari, and by his grandson Eddie. All services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove, IL (1032 Maple Ave., 60515) where John has been a member since 1969. Visitation (at the church) will be on Saturday, Sept. 8th from 1-3 pm and a service will follow immediately thereafter (also at the church). Flowers or donations may be sent to the church in John's name.
