Jean Moore Obituary

Jean P. Moore, nee Knight, age 89, of Carol Stream. Beloved wife of the late Ace, dearest mother of Jim & Peggy, loving daughter of the late Bert & Clara Knight, fond sister of Elsie (the late Bill) Siron, Frank (Phyllis) Knight, & Nancy (Bill) Birdsell; the late Robert (Catherine) Knight, Ruth (Red) Josephson, & Edith (the late Russ) Deal. Mrs. Moore was born & raised in Peoria County IL. Like many others of her generation, her promising college career was cut short by World War II, & she spent the war as a telephone operator at downstate Camp Ellis. After the war, she moved to Chicago, where she married filmmaker Ace Moore & started a family. They settled in Carol Stream in 1959, & she began a long & respected career as a journalist, historian & author. She wrote for the Wheaton Daily Journal until its demise in the 1970s, then moved on to a series of other suburban papers. She served as president of the DuPage County Press Association & helped found the Suburban Press Club of Chicago. Mrs. Moore's work in local history led to preservation of the Gretna IL railroad station & the 1850s era Saint Stephen cemetery, earning her the title of Carol Stream Special Citizen of 1975. Mrs. Moore authored or collaborated on more than a dozen books of history & biography. Build Your Own Town... The Carol Stream Story; From Tower to Tower - a History of Wheaton IL; & Wheaton, a Pictorial History, are the definitive works on their subjects. Among her later works is the biography of pioneering woman legislator Lottie Holman O'Neill in Women Building Chicago 1790-1990. Mrs. Moore's research collections are housed at Northern IL University, Wheaton, College & the Carol Stream Public Library. Visitation Friday 9am until time of service at 11am at Brust Funeral Home, 415 N. Gary Ave, Carol Stream. Interment Wayne Township Cemetery, West Chicago. 603-510-0044

DuPage County has lost one of its greatest treasures. Jean Moore's spirit truly will live on in her writings and through the lives of those she touched. I will never forget what I learned from her through her books and in our conversations on various community topics. In my work at The Daily Journal and at Carol Stream schools for many years, Jean was the person I would turn to for research and insight. She was always willing to share her thoughts. I am sorry to hear she is gone. May she rest in peace.

From the day we met, I considered you my "second" Mom, my mentor, and the sweetest, most considerate, loving and kind lady I ever knew. You taught me to never let any handicap hold me back in doing what I love best in life. You were NEVER a quitter, nor a complainer. You never spoke unkindly about anyone, nor did you sit back and let someone else do it for you. I have the utmost respect for you here on Earth and in Heaven above. I can only say "THANK YOU" for everything and may you rest comfortably in your new home 'til we meet again. Bill and I love you, Mother Moore.

To the family of Jean Moore,

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Jean. It was an honor to know Jean and to be her friend. She was such an important part of Carol Stream. She was always available to me to listen and share her knowledge and wisdom. Carol Stream will not be the same without her.

Dear Family of Jean,
My family has always been thankful for her keeping the Landmeier family and the "Out on the Farm" TV show in the history of the area. She has been a great friend from a distance and somehow we will really miss her. Please have comfort in her life and her passing.

Dear Family of Jean Moore: She made a tremendous contribution to DuPage County by reporting and writing its history. We at the Friends of Pioneer Cemeteries (of Milton Township) are saddened by her passing, but pleased that we were able to make her our first Emeritus Member earlier this year.

My dear Mrs. Jean Moore-
You knew me all of my 31 years, and were so very valuable to the Kostopoulos family. Our families will be forever intwined, and I am proud to have known you. I will never forget your embrace, your smiles, and your talent. Your published works, articles, books... Well, they will live on forever.
Now you are at peace- And will be missed by many on Earth.
Until we meet again, Joshua-Paul Angell (Judy Kostopoulos's son)
