Jason Ritchie Obituary

Jason Michael Ritchie, 22, was granted his angel wings on May 1, 2009. He touched family and friends in some small way throughout his short, yet very memorable life. Jason's life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. His gentle smile could melt the hearts of those around him and though he never spoke a word, his voice and thoughts could always be heard. Jason was filled with passion, strength, perseverance and led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to grow and contribute. He could spend hours in the hockey arena practicing and working his goal tending toward his dream of becoming a professional league player. He also had a natural writing ability that he had hoped one day would lead him toward a career in sports journalism. He enjoyed travel, music, sleeping late and reading stories. He loved listening to the sounds of the ocean and especially laughter which would make him smile. He spent many hours at the beach where he loved to watch the sunsets, hanging out with his friends. In his short years, he was able to study and learn through several school sponsored programs that spanned four continents. With Jason's passing we remind others that life is to be celebrated. Although we will miss him everyday, especially his winning smile, he will forever remain in our hearts. Through his teachings about life, we were able to create wonderful memories and it has been a privilege to be his parents. We are so thankful Jason's brother Jon had each other so he can hold dear the memory of Jason's gentle spirit. Jason leaves behind many wonderful friends that provided love and support that enhanced his quality of life. Jason's love extends to all of his wonderful hockey team. There is a special place in our hearts for Jason's friends and there are so many we can't name them all. Because of their continual dedication, love and support, Jason was able to survive any of life's challenges. He will be dearly missed by all his friends and family and all of these special people, provided Jason with love and life. Jason is survived by his loving parents, Bob and Donna Ritchie; brother Jon Ritchie and cousin Nicole; maternal grandfather, Ray Chappelow; paternal grandfather Craig Ritchie; paternal great-grandmother Margaret Ritchie; aunts, Debbie, Kathy and Kim; uncle, Terry and his significant other Dawn and many other family members. Memorial Services will be held at 2pm Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at Flanner & Buchanan Washington Park East with calling there on Tuesday from 12 noon until time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jason Ritchie Memorial Hockey Scholarship Fund, C/O 7650 W. Courtney Campbell Cswy, Suite 1200, Tampa, FL 33607-1462. wwwflannerbuchanan.com

We continue to think about Jason, and about what a sweet kid he was. Jason was friends with our so Josh at Vermont Academy. Jason was part of a group of sweet, somewhat irreverent, loyal and supportive of each other, kids. I know that they miss Jason, I know that they think about him often.

I graduated from Eckerd in '08 and spent a lot of time with Jason last year. Jason was a loyal friend, intelligent, funny and just made people feel good. Everytime I picture his face, he's smiling, and I think that is such a memorable and special characteristic of a person. With so much in life to be serious about, it's refreshing to know a person that took steps forward with optimism and light-heartedness. His infectious smile is one I will not soon forget. It was a pleasure to have known and spent time with him. There is no doubt in my mind that such positive attributes developed as a result of wonderful role models in Jason's life- thus, thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie, for Jason. My ongoing thoughts and prayers are with you.

Jason was Bobbys best friend, i spent a lot of time with him at the Sandra and Mikes when he wass staying with them in Diamond bar. Although bobby and i are no longer together i considered Jason to be a good friend of mine as well. he always had the power to make me laugh and bright a smile to my face when i needed it. Your family is in my prayers, and Jason is loved.

Jason lived with us for a year and shared our home in every sense of the word. His winning smile, the bounce in his step, his friendship with all, and his love of hockey were evident each and every day. No one ever forgets a kid like this.
