We are a Lane School family, and are still struggling with the loss of Mrs. Hazen. My daughter Rachel, continues to ask why this had to happen. A big question for a little girl to grapple with.

What we do know, is that Mrs. Hazen's influence and grace will continue to live in our daughter's heart. For that, we are thankful.

Our 2nd grade son Michael had the pleasure of working with Janice this year. She made him feel so welcomed and special as this was his first year at The Lane School. He so enjoyed his time with her and she has done wonders to advance his reading skills. We appreciate the wonderful teaching qualities that she shared with our son. My God bless your family and keep you strong with knowing how she inspired so many of us by being such a beautiful person.

To Janice's Family ~ I worked with Janice in Woodridge and then we remained in contact when she went to Hinsdale. I always tried to get her to move to my school District, but she remained loyal to Hinsdale. Janice was a remarkable educator, woman and colleague. My heart goes out to all of you in this huge loss of a wonderful person! My prayers are with you!

How sad this news is. Janice and I grew up across the street from each other in Wheaton. It was a different time. No video games and only 3 channels. We played outdoors till the sun went down. It was a neighborhood of kids and friends. Wonder years, wonderful times, wonderful friends. Janice was special then and as I see from these comments from a lifetime of other friends it was always so.

Bob, Jon, and Diana: We just learned of Janice's passing. We share with you in your loss and offer our sincerest sympathy and prayers. We will always cherish the times at Farmstead pool and the many great memories we had with your family.

I worked with Janice for 4 years at The Lane School. She was patient, caring, silly, fun to be around and devoted to her students. She tricked the children into learning how to read by making the reading program fun. She spoke about her husband and children all the time. Family and friends meant everything to her. What a wonderful lady. So glad she touched my life.

We are very sorry for your loss. Our daughter, Kayla, will miss Mrs. Hazen very much. You are in our prayers.

Janice made me smile every day I saw her and her example renewed my excitement to be a teacher. I will miss her strength, charm and wit dearly.

As I put our daughter Elizabeth to bed tonight, she shared with me all the wonderful and fun things that Mrs. Hazen did to teach her to read. It sounded fun! Elizabeth talked about Mrs. Hazen's wonderful sense of humor, "the wand" and her "fancy" clothes. We are greatful that such a wonderful person touched our daughters life while building a foundation for the future. Thank you for your kind heart and dedication to all ... you will be missed.

Janice taught me the gifts of patience, humor, and light-heartedness during my time at The Lane. I will always remember her happy spirit and the way she would make her students laugh. My heart is with The Lane community and the Hazen family.

Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt prayers go out to the Hazen family. We will miss Janice very much.

6th grade would have been unbearable without Janice and her wacky sense of humor. Her friendship meant more to me than I can express. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this very difficult time.

Our daughter, Samantha, was fortunate to have worked with Mrs. Hazen. She adored her and looked forward to working with her daily. May her legacy live on and be an inspiration to those lives that she touched.

Our daughter, Heidi adored Mrs. Hazen. Heidi would cherish her visits with Mrs. Hazen usually on Thursday afternoon for a brief chat, a game and words of encouragement. Mrs. Hazen will be deeply missed. We are grateful to have known her. Her dedication,bright spirit and warmth will never be forgotten.

Janice was such a bright spot in high school. I had moved in my junior year and she made the move so much easier by her kindness. May you receive comfort from the One who created her and loved her best.

The Lane School halls will be a much quieter place without the clack of her shoes....the sound of her rhymes...the humor of her words. Janice's spirit will live on every day in the lives of the students and staff at The Lane. She will be deeply missed.

Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. When I moved to Wheaton in high school, Janice made me a part of her group. I had a wonderful friend from that moment on. Her humor and her lightness of spirit will be missed but never forgotten.

Whenever I think of Janice Hazen I think of spending time with her and her daughter Diana, and driving around in the Hazen's white jeep while Janice sang the "How Bizarre" song. She was such a happy, cheerful lady and she will be deeply missed. Diana, I will always remember how your mom taught us about bra flings :) There are many good memories that I am lucky to always be able to hold in my heart.

Not a single day passed that Janice did not lift your spirit or make you laugh until you couldn't laugh any more. Her optimism, warmth, humor, and passion will be with us always.

Janice brightened my sons life everyday he went to school. Connor would check in with her and she would start his day with her beautiful smile, encouragement and made him feel proud no matter what was going on. Thank you for sharing Janice with us and may she always be the guiding finger when Connor reads. Janice will never be forgotten in our hearts!

Janice was my good friend and my always mentor. She generously taught me everything she knew about being a reading specialist and a true professional. But most importantly, she taught me how to laugh.

This is a very difficult time for your family and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Janice was a beautiful, caring lady. She brightened every day as we sat together watching our daughters skate. Always willing to help, always willing to share. She made us laugh and that is the way I will always remember her.
