Jan Sopoci Obituary
Jan Sopoci, passed into eternal life on August 13, 2014. A resident of Brookfield, IL, for much of his life.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, Riverside, IL to celebrate the life of Jan Sopoci.
Jan was the beloved husband of the late Anna for 64 years, dear father of Jan Andrew, Elena Sopoci (Doug Belknap), and Anne Marie Brinley (Paul), loving grandfather of Shannon (Rob), Tom (Hannah), Matthew, Kaitlin (Shane), Bianca (Ben), Rory (Zuzka), Kristen (Duncan), Elizabeth, Janelle (Greg), Emily, great-grandfather of Nicole, Jacob, Rowan and Zoey.
He was also predeceased by his granddaughter Samantha.
Born in Slovakia in 1925, Jan was a leader in the Slovak-American community in the Chicago area and in New Jersey where he lived for 25 years, as Supreme Secretary of Sokol USA. Over the years, Jan was an officer in Sokol USA Lodge 39, District L. Stur, and the United Lutheran Society Assembly 86. Jan bowled on the Hawthorne Pioneers Bowling League and enjoyed walking and tending his roses. Most recently he had been a resident of Saratoga Grove Assisted Living in Downers Grove.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences and sincerest sympathy for the great loss of your dear father. He was a dear friend of and co-leader with my father, Emil Slaninka, for the Sokol USA Lodge 304 for many years. Emil passed away in 1998, at which time your dad expressed his last respects......two wonderful men dedicated to their heritage.
