Jacqueline Mason Obituary

Jacqueline L. Mason, 74, of Clarendon Hills, passed away. Jacqueline was born September 5, 1933 to Chester Mason and Mabel Nall. In 1965, she was an independent missionary in Guatemala. During the year she was in Guatemala, she worked with various religious faiths teaching and working in the infirmary. Jacqueline began her career in a long-term care in 1996 in Peoria, Illinois where she worked as a Consulting Therapist and Administrator. She relocated to Chicago where she continued her profession as an Administrator, Regional Manager for 18 facilities, and Vice-President of Operations for 11 facilities in the State of Illinois. Throughout her career, she has been involved in all aspects of nursing home operations from construction, openings and operations, to management and administration. In 1984, she realized her dram of owning her own facility. Named after her maternal grandmother (W. Burgess Nall), she opened Burgess Square Healthcare Centre in Westmont, IL. Under her direction, the facility achieved on of the first "6-Star" ratings by the State of Illinois Department of Public Aid. Throughout the subsequent years, the facility has been highly-rated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. In 1991, Jacqueline established Management Professionals for Healthcare. This company provided consultation services to many long-term care facilities throughout the state of Illinois and was also contracted by the State of Illinois to assist with monitoring and receivership. Jacqueline's commitment to providing a quality lifestyle for residents in long-term care facilities earned her respect in the State of Illinois. She participated in several studies about her management techniques. These included "Paths to Excellence in Quality Nursing Homes" (IDPA); "Study of the Formulation and Implementation of Effective Patient Care Plans" (University of Illinois); "Examination of a Nursing Home Organizational Model Proven Effective by QUIP Standards" (University of Illinois). Her management style was also the focus of a film documentary by Terra Nova Films entitled "Seven Days a Week" which was filmed under a grand program for the State of Illinois Department of Public Aid. She served as a member of the Governor's Executive Task Force on Long Term Care (1986-1987) and in March of 1990, Burgess Square received a Governor's award for "Living in Family Environments". She has also served on task forces for Medicaid Reimbursement, Legislation and Government Relations. Jacqueline has been the guest speaker at the Coalition for Nursing Home Reform in Washington, D.C. in 1988; Governor's Conference for Long-Term Care in 1988 and Kansans for Improvement Nursing Homes in 1989. Jacqueline and her management style have been featured in various newspaper and magazine articles and she also wrote an article for the AHCA Provider Magazine entitled "Management". Jacqueline is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces/nephews and great-great-niece/nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Agatha Miller, Shirley Hull and John Mason. Visitation and Memorial service will be held Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 6-8pm at Gibbons Elliston Funeral Home, First and Grant St., Hinsdale, IL 60521, Family and friends will meet Friday, July 25, 2008 at Notre Dame Church for 12pm funeral mass, Chicago Ave and Norfolk in Clarendon Hills. What a giving and heart and soul. My first introduction to Jackie was when her nephew and I got married and she was genereous enough to offer her us her condo in Lake Geneva for our honeymoon. What a thoughtful and unselfish act of kindness. It was beautiful. Each time thereafter when we visited you could tell the love and admiration Scott had for his Aunt. Scott was amazed and intrigued by her many stories and adventures... they would laugh endlessly together. A memory that will never be forgotten.

Dearest Aunt J,

Thank you for the love that you have given me! Thank you for the lessons that you have taught me! Thank you for being a wonderful role model and making me believe that anything was possible. Thank you for showing me that giving is more precious that receiving. Thank you for sharing your life with me. Thank you for loving my children Justin and Wesley and grandchildren, Madison and Harlan. You are loved by so many! It is a comfort to know that you are with Mom Mason, Mom, Aunt Shirley, Uncle John and Jimmy but most of all with the Lord. You are safe and without pain. I will miss you and always hold you ever so close in my heart. Love you always, Leilani

Jackie Mason, among other things, was a very loyal and dear friend. She was incredibly intelligent, accomplished and kindhearted. She will truly be missed. May God rest her soul.

I knew Aunt Jackie through marriage to her nephew Scott A. Mason. Since the day I met her, she was most kind, generous and pleasant and I always loved being around her. She had a huge heart for others, and especially family as evidenced throughout her lifetime in her outpouring of love and attention and care taking. I am sure she touched more lives than any of us will ever be able to count and will be missed by many.

Miss Mason was my mentor and inspiration. She also gave me my first job as Administrator- providing me all the support I needed to take on this job. 15 years later she inspired me to go back to school in order to become an R.N. She truly changed my life as she changed the lives of so many around her for the better. I will miss you my confidant and friend!

Jacqueline,
It was a great pleasure to work on and rehab your homes and Burgess Square. You were so engaged and such a delight to talk business and personal matters with. You were truly a special lady and will be sorely missed by me and others at Bradley Builders.

Dear, Dear Jackie,
I also could say the same as Bill McNiff. You found my HealthCare design style thru Bill when he was working in Naples and then kept calling me to come to Chicago to work on your construction and design projects. We worked on your Healthcare and your personal homes together, still working for you right up to this week. You are always and will always be such a great inspiration to me and many others when you always showed your love for life and your great quest of providing always for others. You were and are the "Best".

Love, Doreen

I have worked in Long Term Care for over 34 years. Jackie was the one who initially hired me into the industry, and she has remained a constant mentor and inspiration. I will forever hold fond memories of Jackie's guidance and friendship. My condolences to her family and all those close to her heart.
