Helen Suchy Obituary

Helen M. Suchy (nee Wieseman), a Hinsdale resident of more than 50 years, died March 27, 2010 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was 81 years old. Helen was born in Shelby, Nebraska on August 29, 1928 to Richard Christan Wieseman and Viola Esther Wieseman (nee Timm). She grew up in Osceola, Nebraska, graduating High School in 1945. Following high school, Helen attended Nursing School at the Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha, NE. She received her Registered Nursing degree in 1949 and served as a private care nurse and head nurse in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she met and married Dr. Vladimir J. (Wally) Suchy in September of 1953. In 1955 Helen and Wally moved to the Chicago suburbs where Dr. Suchy took up surgical residency at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, IL, and later established his medical practice in Hillside where he served patients for over 50 years. Helen continued volunteer work in a nursing capacity for over a decade after moving to the Chicago area, and remains licensed as a Professional Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Helen was a founding member of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, was active with Hinsdale United Methodist Women (serving as President 1971-1973), current member of the HUMC Prayer Shawl Ministry, and served as the HUMC Priscilla Circle Leader. She was a devoted member of P.E.O. (Chapter KN) for many years, and she treasured her P.E.O sisters and the special missions of this sisterhood. Helen was also active for many years in the Doubling Dollars Investment Club. Hobbies included cooking (and what a marvelous cook she was), Bridge, Crochet, Gardening, and sharing inspirational emails with dear friends and family. She also enjoyed the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Art Institute of Chicago, and Morton Arboretum. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. V.J. Suchy. She is survived by sister Doris Swanson; son Kim Walter Suchy (Terri); daughter Kathryn Rae Suchy and grandchildren Brett Edward Suchy and Laura Rae Suchy. She is also survived by extended family from Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma, as well as many beloved friends who were just like "family" to her. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010, 11am, at the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, 945 So. Garfield Ave., Hinsdale, IL 60521, with a reception at the church to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Hinsdale United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Gibbons Elliston Funeral Home (630) 323-0275.
