When the Border Patrol was disbanded in 1949, they moved to Brookfield, Illinois, where they raised their family. She continued to substitute teach while her sons were in school. Hamlin worked for the U.S. Customs Services until his retirement. Gertrude enjoyed gardening, traveling throughout the United States, and playing cards. She was active in the Brookfield Methodist Church, P.E.O., and Women's Club. After her husband's death in 2003, she moved to Peoria, IL. There, she attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Gertrude is survived by her children, John H. (Connie) Iverson of Dunlap and Lowell P. Iverson of Yorkville, IL; four grandchildren, Sarah (Geoffrey) Kammerer, Laura (John) Allison, Rebecca (Kyle) Kinnary, and Paul Iverson, all of Dunlap, IL; and five great grandchildren, Anna, Madeline, and Matthew Kammerer; Daniel and Charlotte Allison.

Dear Iverson Family, Your mom was my mom's roommate at Lutheran Hillside for the past 6 months. She was so kind. She and I would talk a bit when I went to visit my mom. She was so sharp, unlike my mom her hearing was so good. I do hope my loud conversations with my mom did not disturb her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. In sympathy Susie Boniger
